Colds and Sunburns–Still Learning

I have been monitoring my blood sugar ever since I was diagnosed as Pre-Diabetic.  I do this at least twice a day. First thing in the morning, and two hours after at least one meal.  I have made changes in my diet, tried to increase my exercise, lost weight–basically all the things my doctor told me to do.  My fasting blood sugars have shown a definite decrease.  So I was surprised when they started being up over 100 again.

I was doing all the same things but all suddenly those numbers were going up 10-15 points higher than they had been.  The only difference was that I had come down with one of those lovely spring colds.  Not even a bad one.  Just a mild case of congestion.  My numbers stayed up until about a week after it was gone.

Just as they were beginning to show signs of coming back down, I went on vacation.  A lovely family trip to the beach.  Now I am of Scotch-Irish descent and have the skin tone to go with it.  So when I go to the beach, I am covered in sunscreen and spend much of my time under an umbrella.  But the first time I go out, I will still get a little pink.  Not much–just a little.  But the first thing I noticed was that my fasting numbers went up again!  I have since found out that any time your body is stressed it reacts with a release of hormones that can cause an increase in blood sugar levels.  For someone with normal blood glucose that is a problem your body deals with easily.  For those of us with elevated levels, it can be a little more tricky.  But, as I have found out, they do come back down when your body has healed itself .  So, take care of yourself and when these things happen, just continue doing the things you know work for you and don’t stress over those numbers.
