Bladder weakness

It’s impossible to know exactly how many people live with bladder weakness and urine leakage, women and men both, because so many sufferers tell no one about it. The number of sufferers is estimated to be in the millions, but many people are embarrassed and ashamed of their own bladder weakness.

You shouldn’t be. Bladder weakness is something that does happen naturally, usually due to muscle weakness in the pelvic area, but it’s also something that can be cured or gain better control over their bladders. Around 80 percent of all people who suffer with incontinence, urine leakage, can completely reverse the problem to re-gain control of their bladders. With daily care, you can stop leaks and stop feeling that embarrassment.

Stop that leaking bladder

When it comes to urine leakage, women make up a majority of the patients that doctors treat for the problem. This is because vaginal childbirth is one of the leading causes of bladder weakness; it causes muscle weakness and damage that makes the bladder slip out of place. However, those muscles can be repaired. Bladder weakness may also be caused by kidney stones, certain prescription drugs and lowering estrogen levels.

  • Change your habits. Certain dietary habits can worsen urine leakage. Women in their vibrant years are encouraged to avoid caffeine and alcohol anyway, as they can trigger hot flashes, but ingesting caffeine and alcohol will also make your urge to urinate more dramatic and more frequent. Drink plenty of fluids during the day to reduce the risk of urinary tract and bladder infections, but lessen your fluid intake in the evening so you don’t feel the urge to urinate when you’re trying to sleep.
  • Bladder control exercises. Practice bladder control exercises every day to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, the muscles that support the bladder. Daily Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor. You can do Kegels without even moving from the couch; just get in the habit of performing them during your favorite TV program or while you’re reading a book.
  • Lose weight. Being overweight can make your bladder weakness worse, and lead to more unwanted urine leakage. Women carrying around excess weight have larger bellies that put even more pressure on the pelvic floor muscles, which only worsens leaking bladder problems.
  • Schedule. Create a urination schedule for yourself to control an overactive bladder. Visit the restroom every two hours at first, then extend the time between bathroom breaks. Once your bladder is on a regular schedule, it can help you avoid leaking bladder problems.

There are lots of ways you can control and treat leaking bladder problems. A physician can administer a urodynmics test that will tell you exactly what’s causing your leaking bladder problems, so you can devise a better treatment plan. Certain medications and devices can also help you re-grain control of a leaking bladder. If all else fails, there are surgical options to pursue. Speak to a physician to learn more about all of these options, and to find more ways to prevent and control urine leakage. Women all over the world simply live with this problem, but you don’t have to.
