Bio-Identical Hormones

Can anyone tell the brand names or prescription names of bio-identical hormones with both estrogen and progesterone? I have been on a patch but the hormones were synthetic. If I know some product names I can ask my doctor about them.

Bioidentical estrogen (actually estradiol, which is one of the 3 estrogens) is called “Estrace” and bioidentical progesterone is “Prometrium.”  (and note: “progestin” is synthetic progesterone.  Progestin should be avoided - but many doctors thing progestin and progesterone are the same thing, but they are not).

Thanks for this info. I have tried Prometrium (little white ball-shaped capsules) and didn’t notice much help. I have also been on compounded progesterone cream and nothing happened.

        Hi Wendy,

What else were you taking at the time – anything in your BHRT regime other than Prometrium?

I understand hormones work in combination with each other, and that it’s actually rare (or should be rare) to be only taking one thing.  For instance, estrogen and progesterone are needed to balance each other, so each can work, and they “oppose” each other in ways that prevent cancer from occuring (a heightened risk from taking just estrogen alone).

I need and take DHEA as it is a “precusor” hormone from which others are built/utilized, and my estrogen and progesterone would not work as well in the absence of DHEA – maybe you need some DHEA?

Also, the dose can be important – at various times I have taken from 100 mg to 200 mg a day of Prometrium, depending on what my latest bloodwork shows and what symptoms I am experiencing – maybe you weren’t taking enough?  Progesterone doesn’t affect me the way it does some women, who find it makes them sleepy (which is why you take progesterone at night).

I can’t say I “notice” anything specific from being on Prometrium per se…it is the overall combined effect of all my BHRT that stopped my searing hot flashes and let me now get a good night’s sleep.

I went to my naturopath a few days ago and he confirmed that his usual regimen was not working for me and I am one of the few women who actually needs to add estradiol and estrone. My hormones are ‘balanced’ but just too low. My DHEA was at a good level. He explained that some women lack certain enzymes that convert progesterone to the other hormones and that is genetic. Since my mom always has had hormone problems, that could be the case with me.

I am seeing my MD next week and will get a prescription for Estrogel. I already have one for progesterone cream so the naturopath thinks by adding Estrogel (or its equivalent) that should take care of the problems. I agree, since the only thing that got rid of the hot flashes in the past was the patch.

I am looking forward to being cool and comfortable all day, getting a good night’s sleep, and having nice (not lizard-like) skin again. Also, my sex life has dried up because it was all just too painful and sensationless. That should come back. Relief is in sight.

PS. Apparently Prometrium does not convert to other hormones like testosterone while a compounded cream will. The liver has to break down Prometrium and not a lot of it gets through to the entire system – so I’m told.

Before venturing to synthetics, I would look making lifestyle changes and check into bio-identical hormones that do not have a synthetic component.  As I tell everyone, please investigate all of your options.  This article might give you some more details.  Menopause Relief

I have made every lifestyle change and tried every natural alternative that I can think of. And believe me I have thought of a lot. I eat low-glycemic, live a quiet life (though business can be stressful at times), and take supplements.

The hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia is not going away. The only time it did was when I was on a hormone patch. I am considering going back to that.
