Hi Silkwood,
Here is the combination of what I have found works best for midlife, female belly fat (midriff thickening) problems:
1) Hormone balancing, especially thyroid hormones (and I am talking bio-identical, not synthetic, hormone replacement); thyroid is key to metabolism and fat burning – when it’s “off kilter” you store all incoming calories as fat and can’t burn any fat. Also, estrogen is important as it is responsible for maintaining body contours (i.e., a waistline).
2) Eliminating refined carbs – especially alcohol (which just becomes sugar in your bloodstream, and your liver can’t do its job of burning fat when it’s busy metabolizing alcohol). If you must drink, only imbibe with food and ensure you’re eating protein.
Don’t eat anything made with flour (including rice flour) – anything made with any kind of flour(s) is a refined carb. Eat proteins, and low glycemic index (low GI) veggies and fruits to keep your blood sugar steady.
Avoid empty refined carbs by not buying any processed food – i.e., stay out of the middle aisles of the grocery store – shop only the fresh stuff which is on the perimeters of the grocery store. As Jillian Michael’s says “If it didn’t come right from the ground or have a mama, don’t eat it.” Processed/refined foods are empty calories and full of additives (e.g., glutamates) that are bad for you in many ways beyond just making you fat.
If you must occasionally eat rice or pastas, try to eat just organic, whole grain brown rice, and whole wheat or brown rice pasta in small amounts (i.e., 1/2 cup), to reduce blood sugar problems.
Refined carbs are also largely responsible for belly bloat and water retention that makes you look and feel fat.
3) Eat whole fat dairy in moderate amounts – the dairy fat satiates appetite and is needed to enable your body to utilize the calcium in the dairy. Non-fat dairy usually has lots of sugar which wreaks havoc in your bloodstream (makes you fat and gives you cravings), and ultimately non fat dairy weakens your bones as milk fat is critical to the calcium metabolizing/bone building process.
4) Count/control sugar grams even more than calories – Jorge Cruise wrote “The Belly Fat Cure” and gives the guideline of eating no more than 15 grams of sugar per day, and having 6 servings of complex carbs (veggies and fruit) if you want a flat tummy. His book is excellent and has recipes, and recommendations for grocery shopping and eating out.
5) A regular exercise regime that you like and will actually do - it must utilize resistance of some type (weights) and engage your large muscle groups (lower body) for maximum fat burning and jump-starting metabolic processes for weight loss.
Excellent advice and we need to keep in mind that this is how we need to eat and live for the rest of our lives to avoid being one of these statistics -
60% of older boomers already suffer from chronic health problems (McKinsey Research)
Well, I might get hit by a bus tomorrow, so i am going to eat what I like. I am sick of hearing things we can’t should have. I will never give up my coca-cola.
I walk 10 miles a day, had a personal trainer, weight watchers, u name it………didn’t work, and I was born a tiny person….size 5…..now a 12……and i am almost 64.
I know that my bigger than I’d like, used be be flat as an ironboard stomach, is due to cortisol……now if I can just find that hunky guy……no more stress..
I still eat lots of what I like (as you note, life is short!) - I just focus on and select those foods from what I know I will enjoy that won’t contribute to making me fat (by wreaking havoc with my blood sugar levels or compromising my liver/fat burning capability).
I am one of those many women whose metabolism started to change with perimenopause. At 40 I developed a gluten intolerance; by my late 40′s I developed insulin resistance (also known as metabolic syndrome). If I don’t want to be fat and unhealthy, I know I need to follow permanent lifestyle and dietary choices that are right for me/my body.
Alicia, I know it is none of my business, but might you be willing to look into and consider what the coca cola may be doing to your body? I don’t drink sodas of any kind (regular or diet) because of either the high sugar content or questionable artificial sweetners; some have chemical additives, and I believe many sodas contain phosphorous which is proven to just leach the calcium right out of our bones.
Suzanne Somers, Jillian Michaels, Jorge Cruise and Jamie Oliver are just some of the folks I’ve read who warn about the dietary pitfalls (belly fat etc) of sodas (regular and diet). Jorge Cruise’s book “The Belly Fat Cure” shows regular coke contains 41 grams of sugar (he recommends no more than 15 grams of sugar per day, so coke is almost 3 times the recommended daily amount). He recommends substituting Zevia Natural Cola which has 0 sugar and is sweetened with natural stevia.
Maybe you are fully aware of all this and choose to drink coke anyway. But, in case you were not aware, I just wanted to share what I’d read.
I wish you well with finding your hunky guy!
Hi, Lisa: I’ve been drinking (regular) Coca-cola for 50 years. I figure we have hydrochloric acid in our stomachs and I don’t worry about it. I don’t trust artificial….anything.I might try Zevia, but never have seen it, or heard of it. I thank you for the information. People have been telling me that for years; I just ignore them, LOl, LOL
Thanks,again…Lisa! Smiles, Alicia
Yeah, telling someone that Coke (or in my case Pepsi) is bad for them is kinda like telling them smoking is bad for them. Tried stevia – YUCK!
I figured out a long time ago, and haven’t changed my mind yet – if you want to live a long and healthy life, pick your parents well.
… don’t be surprised when you try Stevia! But do try it! I just can’t get over the licorice taste it has. Perhaps some folks have different taste buds then I have. I found that if when I just switched to water, with ice (I know, room temperature water is best for your digestion, but… give me a break!) your body will crave the water.. not the coke/pepsi. When you try a soda after drinking just water for a while… it will taste terrible… especially the fizzy part, which I used to not be able to live without! I had a pepsi from the 7-11 last night. I commented to my friend, John, that it was probably the first ‘soda’ I’ve had in a year! The result was, once again, it just didn’t do the trick – like it used to do! Give me my wonderful, filtered water, out of the fridge (
Another safe sweetener to try is Xylitol – it is made from birch trees, and I can’t distinguish between it and regular table sugar.
Jorge Cruise (“Belly Fat Cure”) recommends it, and I have not been able to find any drawbacks to Xylitol documented on the internet yet (which is not the case with Splenda and Aspartame etc.).
My “go to” beverage (when others are having wine or a beer) is San Pellagrino naturally sparkling water. It contributes to balancing the body’s ph level.
Xylitol seems to be harmless to humans, good for teeth and hormone balance, even. We make it in our bodies, it’s in every berry. Large amounts can act as a laxitive, some people are more suseptable to this effect than others (anorexics love xylitol for this, btw, only prob is it does have calories)
The only caveat I have is this: Xylitol is DEADLY TO DOGS and possibly other pets. As little as one or two sticks of gum can kill a tiny dog. My dog stole a dozen muffins off the counter one day. Hate to think what would have happened if they’d been sweetened with Xylitol. You must be careful with your gum, your toothpaste, and anything else with this stuff in it (you can buy it in boxes like Splenda now) if you have pets.
Thanks everyone….appreciate the feedback. Have cut back on almost all sugar and in just a few days see a few pounds off on the scale! My husband went to a nutritionist and is following the Blood Type food plan. He’s type ‘A’…not sure what I am but it recommends no dairy, no sugar, high alkalikne/low acid foods, barely any red meat, few whole grains. I can do that with him. There are a bunch of recipes in the booklet he got that we will try. Tomorrow with try the Instant Breakfast that is made mostly with organic seeds, water and fruit…can’t wait. I may add some whey powder. My biggest problem is the couple glass of wine I enjoy! Have cut back to that as I understand the effects! No more rum and diet coke for me!
..nothing wrong with being a size 12! I am58 yrs, 5’8″ and back in the day I was a size 10/11. Then after my daughters were born, I gained 80 lbs. Then, I got a little bigger
I am now a size 2x… if only I could be a size 16! That would be great! I eat healthy during the day… but it’s at night that’s the problem, just can’t seem to get many ‘days in a row’ of eating right! Help!!
