Many nutrient-rich foods can be used to prevent grey hair color, but are there natural ingredients you can use to reverse it after it’s already happened? Some swear by food remedies as viable grey hair treatments. Will they work for your greys?

How to stop grey hair with food

Science has been trying to find out how to stop grey hair for decades. Researchers have only recently unlocked the specific cellular changes that take place to cause this color shift. Age, chemicals and hormones can change the way your hair follicles produce pigment, which gives color to all hair. When that pigment is no longer being produced, you get grey hair color. But some say there are natural ingredients that will kick-start that pigment-making process again. Will they work for you?

  • Blackstrap molasses. Some say that molasses is the key to keeping grey hair color away. Put a spoonful in hot tea every day and drink it down.
  • Grapefruit seed extract. Put several drops of grapefruit seed extract in your conditioner and let it sit on your hair for 10 minutes before rinsing it out.
  • Castor oil. You don’t have to swallow it, but you will have to smell the castor oil as you rub it into your scalp nightly. Be gentle as you massage it in, let the oil sit overnight and wash your hair thoroughly the next morning.
  • Natural dyes. Sage leaves, henna and indigo powder may all be used as natural grey hair dye that darkens grey hair color without using any harmful chemicals. The natural dyes have their own pigment that’s so strong, it rubs off into your hair when it’s used correctly. However, natural grey hair dyes won’t give you the same range of color that you can obtain with the synthetic dyes.

Reversing grey hair color

There’s no real scientific evidence that supports using natural remedies to reverse grey hair color, but researchers are working toward the day when it might be possible. Now that science understands the causes of grey hair color, using science to stop it and reverse it completely can’t be too far behind. Until then, women have many different coloring options they can use to cover grey hair color and give it brand-new life. Thanks to the recent grey hair trend, you may decide that it’s much more fashionable to naturally go grey, anyway.
