Blame the recession for rising cases of female hair thinning

One UK-based paper claims that up to 41 percent of British women are suffering with female hair thinning, and it could be a direct result of recession. The rate of women experiencing hair loss and thinning hair has been increasing, seemingly in correlation to increasing financial worry around the country and the world.

Financial woes and thinning hair

Women are experiencing more hair loss, according to expert Trisha Buller, due to “the environment and the pressures we are all under today.” She’s a trichologist, a hair and scalp specialist, and she thinks the trend in female hair thinning is directly linked to the poor economy. “There is a lot of anxiety because of the economic climate,” she explained to England’s The Sun. “It is very difficult to reduce stress in this day and age. We have to go to work and, for many people, the recession has made work very demanding.”

Joanna, one British woman, began noticing severe hair thinning at age 28. In her own words, she was “going through a period of intense stress…I couldn’t find work so money was tight.” Her hair began falling out, sometimes even in clumps, which led to visible bald patches on her scalp. She solved her problem with hair attachments, woven into the head with mesh material.

For Joanna, and for many women who suffer with female thinning hair, it led to changes in her social routines and a loss of self-confidence. Now that she’s treated the problem with faux hair, she’s much more confident. Women have many different options for managing their female thinning hair problems.

  • Cut it. Get your hair trimmed frequently to avoid split ends. The only thing that can treat them effectively is a healthy haircut, so ditch the quick-fix products and head to the salon. Look for coupons to find something affordable when financial problems are a worry. Split ends can go all the way up, eventually damaging the core of your hair. Trim frequently to minimize the damage.
  • Wash well. You should be washing your hair daily to keep your scalp clean. A dirty, oily scalp can lead to clogged follicles that make it harder for hair to grow and lead to improper hair growth. After shampooing, rinse your hair with cold water to lock in the moisture.
  • Eat healthy. By nourishing your body, you’re also nourishing your hair. Make sure you’re getting plenty of protein and vitamins to encourage healthy hair growth.
