Our skin is different now. We need skincare that’s gentler, less drying. Cleansing your face and removing makeup is still an essential step in your skin care routine, but if you’re a woman over 50, you want a product that won’t strip away your skin’s precious natural moisture.

1. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (about $4.10, click to buy)
I have yet to meet a dermatologist who didn’t suggest this pH-balanced, low-lather face wash. Whenever I am faced with irritation, redness, or dermatitis (a definite con side effect of being a beauty editor and trying hundreds of products a week), this comes out of the cupboard. It’s great for vulnerable, dry, sun-damaged irritated skin, especially in the morning. You’ll have to add a warm, wet, clean washcloth to gently remove makeup though in the evening.

2. Carol’s Daughter Bring In The Moisture Gentle Face Wash (about $20, click to buy)
Don’t you love the name of this brand? Lisa Price, a Brooklyn, New York, native who really is Carol’s daughter, started this brand from her home in the early ‘90s and still makes each product by hand. This foamy face wash gently slips off makeup and daily grime with willow bark extract (a natural source of exfoliating salicylic acid), moisturizing aloe vera leaf extract, and soothing ylang-ylang and patchouli. No mineral oil or petroleum in this either.

3. Philosophy’s When Hope Is Not Enough Omega 3-6-9 Hydrating Cleansing Balm (about $25, click to buy)
This extra-moisturizing cleanser replenishes skin with omegas 3, 6, and 9 essential fatty acids while cleansing in the morning or removing all your makeup at night. Incredible for dry skin—it won’t strip but works on restoring your skin’s natural lipid barrier instead.

4. Olay Total Effects Anti-Aging Anti-Blemish Daily Cleanser (about $6.94, click to buy)
Every grown-up woman with breakouts loves this product. When cell renewal slows and dead cells languish on the surface of your skin, how can you not end up with blocked pores and a dull complexion? Wash with this gentle cleanser and its 2% salicylic acid to de-plug blackheads, heal breakouts, and get back a glow.

5. Pond’s Dramatic Results, Age-Defying Cleansing Towelettes (about $6.44 for 30 wipes, click to buy)
Soft-pack disposable wipes infused with vitamin A and retinol to stash in your carry-on bag, car glove compartment, or tote.

6. Aveeno Positively Radiant Make-Up Removing Cleanser (about $5.97, click to buy)
Of course, it’s Aveeno who makes this soap-free, soy-infused wash that won’t dry out your skin or promote irritation. The brand is known for its use of skin-calming botanicals. This cleanser removes all makeup gently but thoroughly, even water-resistant cover-up and long-wear foundations.

7. Perricone MD Cleansing Treatment Bar (about $38, click to buy)
Dr. Perricone’s books got us all eating salmon and blueberries day and night. Now try his 5% glycolic acid and olive oil cleanser. Gulp at the price, but this is not any ordinary morning soap. It skims off dead cells and unclogs pores in a soothing way, so rough texture, dry spots, brown spots, and fine lines are a faint memory.
