Women over 50 understand the importance of a great moisturizer. But do we really have to spend a lot of money to get the hydration we need for our mature skin?
If you’re overwhelmed by the sheer volume of moisturizers available today, but know that you need a moisturizer that actually improves the look, feel and overall condition of skin over 50, here are my top picks. Best of all, you should be able to find a great moisturizer that fits your budget!
1. Intelligent Nutrients Certified Organic Anti-Aging Moisture (about $51.01, click to buy)
A supermodel in her 50s passed this moisturizer along to me recently. The founder of this 100% organic brand is beauty guru Horst Rechelbacher, who also founded Aveda in 1978 and then sold that company to Estee Lauder. There are several remarkable products, but this lightweight treatment is particularly noteworthy. It uses emollient oils of acai, apricot kernel, seeds, apricot, and safflower plus vitamin E to improve suppleness and reduce fine lines. And it absolutely delivers.
2. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 (about $19, click to buy)
This classic, light, daily moisturizer leaves skin soft, conditioned, and protected. It contains the emollient squalene derived from olives, oils from avocado, apricot kernel, and almonds but not a drop of sticky residue.
3. Benefit Dear John (about $32, click to buy)
This silky cream has water-binding sodium PCA, vitamin E, and Pro-vitamin B5 in a lightweight, nongreasy formula that’s perfect for day or night. It’s an easy-to-use choice when you don’t want a complicated regimen.
4. Mario Badescu Skin Care Oil-Free Moisturizer SPF 30 (about $26, click to buy)
This light, basic moisturizer is straight from the historic New York City Mario Badescu skin-care salon where the celeb clientele includes Katie Couric, Cher, Martha Stewart, and Oprah. It has sun protection and soothing botanicals like green tea and aloe vera. It’s simply perfect.
5. Olay Professional Pro-X Age Repair Lotion with SPF 30 (about $39.99, click to buy)
This is a practical do-it-all moisturizer with full, broad-spectrum sun protection and antiaging benefits. The combo of repair and protect vitamins C, and E and big hero ingredient B3 (niacinamide) makes sense. Together they increase the production of ceramides, which bumps up hydration and reinforces the protective lipid barrier so that moisture stays locked in. This entire line is amazing, and it’s hard to single out one product, but this one is a must.
6. L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect SPF 15 Day Cream (about $14.96, click to buy)
This product actually says it’s for mature, thinning skin right on the label. It claims to help skin that’s become more fragile due to calcium and collagen loss, and it does the job as a superb moisturizer. Let it work a few weeks and that crepey onion-paper skin will feel and gleam like Duchesse satin.
7. Clinique Moisture Surge Extended Thirst Relief (about $48.95, click to buy)
When your skin faces environmental extremes, hydration becomes an extra concern. This peach cream-gel is designed to keep moisture in the skin longer with ingredients that attract and hold water to the skin. In this case, the super humectants hyaluronic acid and urea team up with trehalose and sorbitol—sugar-derived ingredients that penetrate the stratum corneum to help in water attraction—and dimethicone, a skin conditioner. Your skin feels cushioned as it soaks up the extra moisture like a sponge. Make this product your daily moisturizer or apply it over another skin treatment for additional help. You can even pat it on during the day right over makeup to refresh your look.
8. Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Rose Day Cream (about $42.95, click to buy)
This gentle but holistic brand known for its natural plant extracts is just great for dry, sensitive skin. The real Dr. Hauschka—an Austrian chemist—started the brand in 1935, and this cream, which packs the extracts of thirty roses in every tube, is a model-industry basic. Jerry Hall told me about this one years ago, and it’s still one of the best basic moisturizers for aging skin.
9. Creme de La Mer Moisturizing Cream (about $189, click to buy)
This is the ultimate classic. There really still is nothing quite like it. Created by aerospace physicist Dr. Max Huber forty years ago to help heal scars he suffered from burns in a lab accident .This sea-kelp-based bio-fermented “broth” is a legendary product that is worth every penny. At one time, it was the most costly wrinkle cream around, and though the brand now includes serums and variations, this is the one that does it all day and night. You need only a tiny amount massaged between your fingertips to cover your entire face .When I was recovering from reconstructive surgery after Mohs surgery I used this, and I’m a believer. I cannot say no to La Mer.
10. Natura Bissé The Cure Sheer Cream (about $190, click to buy)
This product took me by surprise, and I am crazy about it, though the price is high. You could say it’s an anti aging-tinted moisturizer, but that would be selling it short. The cream is more like a whipped cream-gel. It adapts to your skin tone and then blends to match your own while blurring all flaws—from brown spots to redness around the nose and broken capillaries (like Vaseline over the camera lens), and it adds incredible radiance. It’s water-based and water-resistant, and it won’t sweat off. I wore it during a NYC heat wave on a day it was 98 degrees and stayed totally cool.
