When we first hit puberty, our rising estrogen levels gave our body the signal to develop our breasts, create a curved figure, add fuller hips, and blossom into a woman. With all that going for us, we could handle the occasional acne breakout now and again.
Unfortunately, at a time when you’re looking for a good anti wrinkle face cream, you may be simultaneously searching for an adult acne cream. The change in estrogen level that occurs during perimenopause — usually occurring between 40 and 55 — also causes changes in our skin can lead to adult acne. As estrogen declines, some women experience sudden acne breakouts, oily skin and clogged pores. Anti wrinkle face cream won’t help with adult acne, but Lois Joy Johnson knows what does.
Johnson is the author of 2011 Skin Care and Cosmetic Product Guide for Women Over 50: 150 Anti-aging Cosmetics and Beauty Products that Work. She describes the woman experiencing late-in-life acne as the “Meno-Teen.” In her guide, she explains that the cure for the adult acne of the Meno-Teen is very different than the cure teenagers need to heal their skin and prevent breakouts.
“Do yourself a favor and skip blemish busters made for teens – they’re far too drying for mature skin,” Johnson wrote. “On the other hand avoid very emollient [anti] wrinkle [face] creams because they can exacerbate breakouts.”
Johnson suggests that women experiencing acne should find anti wrinkle face creams or other products that help accelerate cell turnover to achieve a smooth even skin tone and texture.
“Dead cells need to be eliminated and pores de-clogged for fresher – looking skin to emerge,” she said. “The overlap of wrinkles and blemishes is being addressed more frequently by beauty products that target adult breakouts and photo-aged skin with glycolic acid, salicylic acid and retinol.”
In the guide, Johnson suggests products for mature blemish-prone skin. The following are products you’ll find may work well alongside your anti wrinkle face cream.
- Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads ($7.73 click here to buy)
These pre-saturated exfoliating pads reduce fine lines and keep pores sparkling clean.
- Dermalogica Clearing Mattifier ($32.99 click here to buy)
This clear matte gel with 2% salicylic acid and skin-soothing green tea and chamomile dries to form a hygienic shield, so makeup glides right on. Blemishes heal quickly because the product stimulates cell turnover.
- Dr. Brandt Pores No More Anti-Aging Mattifying Lotion ($55 click here to buy)
This oil-free hydrating treatment for day or night is worth the price. Retinol increases cell turnover, controls breakouts, refines pores, and smooths out wrinkles. Apple stem cells prevent further damage and boost the water content of your skin. The clean matte finish is makeup compatible.
- La Bella Donna Compressed Mineral Foundation ($50 click here to buy)
This soothing pressed powder is amazing for covering blemished skin. The bonus is you won’t end up with a cakey, flaky look. It can be applied dry or with a damp sponge and works well for rosacea and blotchy or sun-damaged skin. You can even use this base over tinted moisturizer for a hint more coverage or to mask flushed areas.
- La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Light Sunscreen Fluid for Face SPF 45 ($21.41 click here to buy)
This broad-spectrum UVA/ UVB sunscreen is deceptively light but provides fierce protection. It absorbs instantly, has a skin-like matte finish, is water resistant, is fragrance free, and doesn’t feel greasy, even when you’re spending the day outdoors or at the beach. It layers like a dream with treatment products or makeup too.
