anti wrinkle face cream: avoid products containing petrolatum or mineral oil

There is a persisting myth that one of the reasons Marilyn Monroe had such flawless skin is that she applied petroleum jelly as an anti wrinkle face cream. Although it’s true that petroleum jelly can initially lock in moisture in the skin after a shower, eventually its use causes excessive dryness, because it actually repels moisture. In fact, many dermatologists have said that petroleum based oils can contribute to premature skin aging.

Unfortunately some of the most affordable anti wrinkle face cream products use petrolatum or mineral oil in the ingredients. In fact, many collagen based anti wrinkle face cream is combined with petrolatum or mineral oil because 100 percent collagen is like a gelatin and too thick to apply. That brings us to another myth which seems to persist. It’s not true that applying collagen to your face will increase the amount of the protein in the skin.

It’s true that skin protein decreases with age and as a result, the skin becomes thinner, more translucent and dark under eye circles start to appear. Since the skin’s elastic fibers are primarily composed of protein, the decrease can result is sagging skin and wrinkles.

So why doesn’t a collagen based anti wrinkle face cream add protein back into aging skin? It’s simple, protein molecules are too large to penetrate into the skin.

However there is good news. In recent years, researchers have identified several compounds that can stimulate collagen production and increase the amount of collagen present in the skin.

Compounds that have been proven to work include bio-active keratin, peptide complexes and avocado extracts. For example, avocado oil is loaded with nutrients, including vitamin A and essential fatty acids. It’s those nutrients that are believed to stimulate the body to produce more cells and fibers.

So instead of looking for a collagen based anti wrinkle face cream, look for one containing avocado oil or bio-active keratin. And make sure you are not accidentally causing increased dryness by using products that contain petrolatum or mineral oil. If you see either of these ingredients on the label, save yourself some money and a few wrinkles by not using them.
