WHen we were kids, flying on an airplane was so out of the ordinary … everyone dressed up.  For many of us, that is a mental model we still have.

Today, it is anything goes (sometimes unfortunately….I’ve seen way too much skin, tatoos, etc. than I care to on strangers in airplanes.)

My advice:  Dress for  sylish comfort … both physical & mental.     Khaki pants, a nice linen shirt, flats, and a cashmer sweater (either tied around your shoulders or worn for layering)  are perfect.  Want to look stylish?  Throw in a scarf of some type, some big sunglasses, and accessorize with a big stylish tote.

Comfort is the thing, nowadays.  Informal, it’s not a special occasion anymore.

that depends…. are u going on vacation or on business?  If i am going on vacation i do the vacation thing…. white jeans, pretty sandals, big tote, sunglasses, etc.  For Xmas i am going to CT so i do the same except is cold so i do the bluejeans, nice sweater and closed casual shoes which i do not own so i have to think of buying something.  For business, i wear a suit except if the appointments are the next day then i dress casual but nice or at least try to.  If i am menopausal that day… God knows what i look like.

That’s funny.  Please describe what a menopausal woman looks like.  I never thought of that.  That could be the start of a new tread :D

in my case, when i have those episodes of craziness i sometmes go out of the house looking a mess, then get to the store and pass a mirror and cannot believe i went out looking like hell!  Then i pray i don’t see a coworker.

I’ll never forget dressing up to fly on a plane only to hit turbulence and dump my coffee all over myself. Keep it simple and washable.

Happens often (just today, another bird hit caused a plane to drop unexpectedly) After my Bloody Mary incident, I always wear dark clothing.

Forget stylish. Nobody but Joan Rivers cares. Go for comfort and safety. Trekking from gate to gate is best done in comfortable walking shoes or sneakers. Wearing anything that wrinkles easily will just make you look more unkempt at arrival. And don’t forget your seat neighbor may be a klutz. So I wouldn’t wear anything that has to be dry-cleaned. I had a whole glass of Bloody Mary mix spilled on my lap during a 5 hour flight (and that was in first class). Not saying you should dress like a slob. A Best Buy CEO got kicked out of first class recently for wearing grungy sweats. A nice loose pair of Khakis and a decent top would suffice. Safety is your first consideration. In the event of a crash, you want natural fiber, like cotton, clothing so your clothes don’t melt on your skin. And you want real shoes, not sandles or heels – the better to run quickly though burning oil. Do you want to be standing on that airplane wing in the middle of a river wearing sandals or heels?  I’m a frequent flier and know that the chance of a mishap is slim. But your chances of survival are better if you’re prepared.

Good for the airline who threw out the slob.. grungy sweats shouldn’t leave the house.  Even the gym deserves clean sweats.

Good points.  Another consideration – if you are going on a business trip, dress in business casual attire and pack a minimal amount of make-up in your purse.  You never know when your luggage won’t arrive.

My husband is a pilot and adamant – i.e. with good reason – not to wear anything but REAL shoes that will stay on your feet securely. It’s totally a safety issue – his reasoning is the same as above, with an added thought – if there was an accident, the lights are out, there’s broken glass/debris everywhere, and your feet are bare, or you are in unstable shoes, and trying to find the exit….. Think about it the next time you travel – no matter what your age. Those heels/sandals maybe easy to get off/on going through security, but I’ll spend the inconvenient extra few minutes for safety.

Thanks lindalou. Now if we can just do something about allowing babies on laps in airplanes, we’ll be getting somewhere. People think spilled drinks are bad, but spilling babies are a travesty.

Keep it simple and comfortable, be yourself, no body is looking at you anyway, that doesn’t mean you are not attractive, but when people are traveling, they only think about getting to where they are going!  I went to Africa this past summer and I saw people wearing everything. Wear comfortable shoes and take a light jacket!  Hsve fun!!

Comfort and layers.  Chicos has some easy travel pieces that look good and travel well.  Dress in layers so you can be ready if there is a climate change when you get off the plane or the plane gets too cool or hot.  You will need pockets so make sure you have a couple.  I would not wear linen as it will be a mess before you even get ont he plane, but flats and a cardigan and a pretty scarf are good ideas.

I agree.  You don’t have to dress up these days. I try to dress comfortable.  Khakis work best for me, long sleeve top because I’m always cold.  Maybe a vest over that.  Short, lightweight outwewear jacket that can double as a pillow or extra warmth.  Slip-on shoes so I don’t have to mess around tying my shoes in the security line and if my feet start to swell on the flight, I can slip them off!  I usually downsize my purse quite a bit and throw it in a satchel that I take on the plane that holds, book, gum, snacks, MP3 or what-have you.

I agree with those who say that safety comes first. Avoid wearing nylons or other fabrics that will melt on your skin if there’s a fire. Wear comfortable flats so that you can move quickly and easily in case of an emergency.

Beyond that, I think you can, and should, look stylish and feel comfortable. How you dress is a reflection of how you feel about yourself, how much you respect yourself. Care enough to dress your best! Anyone who has watched Oprah’s makeover shows knows what a difference your attire makes in your own attitude and confidence.

    Happy traveling!
