I am 63 and wondering if I’m too old to wear opaque tights or patterned tights with skirts?

Heck NO! Opaque tights look great with the same color shoe as it elongates the leg and makes a slimmer, taller silhouette. Pattern hose, if you have good legs, you go for it. It makes a nice fashion statement with a conservative suit or dress.
I agree…just watch that skirt length!! LOL
No…I wear them all winter…Vera Wang has great ones….
I had an aunt who I always admired for her dress sense. She always looked young and elegant to me. I am sure she never thought “am I too old to wear this”? I am 58 and I wear opaque and patterned tights – I say wear whatever suits you and enjoy how you feel!!
Yes, I think the “rule” of thumb is to wear the same colour shoes. I can’t think about wearing tights or nylons..I’ve been pretty much barefoot all summer and Ontario is still in a warm snap.
The key to wwearing any look is to make it age appropriate. MORE and Style magazines do this from time to time. They take a trend and then show the over 40′s crowd can make it age appropriate.
nope! I think it is actually better, especially as it gets colder…=]
I think the secret is to make it shape appropriate, more than age appropriate. I am short and about 10 pounds over ideal weight and I can’t =won’t wear some outfits simply because I can look like a potato bag while my very thin 82 year old cousin would look stunning it the same outfit. Go with what makes you look good.
it’s very true,Iam agree with tennim

Absolutely not. I am just 70 going on 40. I work in the fashion industry, and as long as it is done with good taste and not trying to look like “mutton dressed up as lamb”, go for it. We cant help getting older, but we dont have to have an old mind. Go for it!!!!!
Are you kidding ?!Opaque pantyhose are a gift from the Universe for women 60 + ! They hide brown spots and broken capillaries while Lycra spandex provides compression to tone up saggy thighs, tummy and tush. Dark neutral opaques like black, chocolate, or charcoal give your legs the longest look- just match them monochromatically with tapered toe shoes or boots ( heels or flats). If your dark opaques also match your skirt or dress you get bonus slimming points and stretch the entire silhouette head to toe. Navy, plum, hunter green also work but it’s harder to find shoes toned to work with them. You’re so right that patterned pantyhose are trendy this year but honestly they work best on long lean model-ish legs. Any pattern from skinny ribs, to herringbone, plaid,or lace and any certainly bright color adds “weight” to the legs. A print emphasizes and highlights width at the thigh and calves. Who needs that ? ! If you crave a fun trendy leg looki this fall ( and I did too Pat ) buy deep rich plummy violet opaque tights and matching suede boots ( purple is the big color spark) or splurge on flat soled over-the knee boots to wear with leggings or jeggings and sweaters.
As long as you do it in good taste, why would it be a problem?
Yes, yes, wear them. I am so weary of reading about what I can and I can’t wear because of my age…….no long hair, no red lips. I’m the boss of me and I’ll wear what I want. Be bold, be strong and look in the mirror before you leave the house. One more things, I have great legs and I’ll decide the lengths of my dresses/skirts!
I do agree with those who say: wear what makes you happy, and don’t worry about your age. But I also will say: Be very, very careful with patterned tights, unless you are super tall with super great legs. It’s pretty easy to look like you are going to a costume ball otherwise. This is true if you are 35 or 75.
However, solid tights, especially with same-colored boots and/or shoes, can make your legs look even longer and thinner.
Not that I am any fashion expert… but my best advice? Get a full length mirror, put it in a well-lighted room, and use it. Mine has saved me from many a fashion mistake.
Just a thought–
Even better to have 2 or even 3 full length mirrors–what you look like face on in a mirror and what you look like from back or side can be very different. works for me anyway. I know one woman who was overweight and would not look at herself in anything but a shoulders up mirror–she did look terrific from face to shoulders.
Agreed, Jasmine, three mirrors are better than one! I try to shop at stores that have at least one three-way mirror in the dressing room. If you don’t have room for one, even a large hand mirror used in conjunction with your full length mirror helps.
I don’t know why any women’s clothing store would not have a 3 way mirror but some don’t.
About the tights–usually a woman’s legs are the last to ‘go’. I think above the knee length with tights or whatever is a very nice look. I wish I could still wear a little bit of a heel but can’t.
Noone over the age of 16 should wear patterned tights ever! I’ve got built in patterns – varicous veins!
Everyone has the freedom to do what feels right. Do whatever makes you feel good and focus less on other people’s opinions. Be who you are, your authentic self, and all will be right in your world. Life is precious, live it with passion and access the joy from within. This is where your true power resides.
Allowing the outside to control your actions is giving away your power. Reclaim your power. Then, only you determine when you feel good.
This is a really big concern for me living in Florida and always sweat more in my crotch. I haven’t worn tights or pantyhose in years as I sweat so much down there. But I really wish I could wear opague type tights for at least a month. Does any one know of any that wouldn’t make me sweat even more? Ive tried thigh highs, garter belts, etc. Am I weird or are there others that always have a sweaty wet crotch????????
