I recently went to my dermatologist for my regular yearly scan… so many of my friends have discovered they have serious sun damage from years of exposure. I play golf and am often out under the open sky. My doctor recommended getting a sunblock product rather than a sunscreen. I’ve ordered SolBar with Zinc from an online store… wonder if anyone else has used it or if you have another sun protection product you can recommend?

Didn’t your dermotologist suggest one???
Yes, she recommended SolBar… which is why I mention it here… I’ve tried it… seems ok so far, though another comment below indicates they did not have as much success…. guess it depends on skin type…
This link has LOTS of information for you. Scroll all the way to the bottom for lots of products/price. Paula Begoun started out writing a book rating nearly every cosmetic on the market. Now she’s online. I had one of her books from several years ago. Here’s the website about sunscreen.

One of the problems of using sunscreen can be the stinging if you get it too close to your eyes. My daughter told me to get the one for children because it’s gentler and won’t sting. So I’m using the Neutrogena Baby sunscreen on my face now, instead of the more expensive Shiseido one I was using. I found I couldn’t use their regular one one on my face, although I use it for my arms and neck.
Good luck.
As one that has had melinoma twice, and go to my dermatoogist now every 3-6 mo. I use Neutrogene Ultra Sheer dry touch sunblock. I have from spf 45 to 70, in my purse, car and at home! I use it all over everyday! It’s very light, non greasy….wonderful. If you have a Costco near you ……they sell it much cheaper! The sun is NOT my friend….but all you VN sisters are!!
I use it too and love it.
I’ve tried Neutrogena products but when I sweat as I do on the golf course, the product runs into my eyes! Talk about stinging sensation. They have one that contains Helioplex which is good, but my skin doctor recommended I take it up a notch with zinc as an ingredient… that’s why I went with the SolBar… that and the fact that it doesn’t seem to run as much….
The sun is not my friend either. I have to wear tons of sunscreen and have yet to find one that doesn’t make my body feel greasy. I have found that “Oceans Potions” 45 for faces isn’t greasy and doesn’t make my face break out..I am going to try the Neutrogene.
Thanks for the advice VN sister.
Thanks you much for putting this out! I don’t have melinoma, but my Dad has had it twice. I’ll recommend this to my Mom, she’ll make him use it!
Yes Neutrogena Ultrta Sheer dry Touch is the best I have every tried and I think I have tried them all.The Sun is not my friend either.
I’m organizing free skin cancer screenings at the beach and at pools and other outdoor venues in NJ…Choose Your Cover-Going outdoors in 2010. This is through the NJ Office of Cancer Control and Prevention..check their web site which will post the dates and places under their events. Most will occur on July 17 with a raindate of the 18th. 10 AM to 2 PM. There will be at least 28 sites statewide….no appointment. We want to screen 2600 people…spread the word…we want to make sure people learn sun safety.
This is just a warning –any sunscreen prevents your body from making natural Vitamin D from the sun. For that reason, you might want to take a natural Vitamin D3 supplement to provide that vitamin for your body, as it helps to prevent melinoma.
I’m also a Melanoma survivor, as is my Dad. However an uncle died from it. Besides using suncreens, he & I also wear clothing from sunprecautions.com which are made from a special Solumbra material that is actually classified as a medical device! The material is 30+ SPF & you don’t have to wear suncreen where you’ve covered by th fabric! It’s a bit costly but at least get a hat & coverup for the beach / pool or around resort towns.
I’m trying to help dispell the old “tan is beautiful” myth; did you know that actually in the time of “Gone with the Wind” being tan was a sign of being poor & having to work outside. Being untanned was IN, & a sign of being RICH!
Be proud of your UN tanned skin & be glad to be cancer free!
I live in SoCal and run sailboat races for a ‘hobby’. My sister came out to help last year and she used SolBar – it did not work very well. She used it all three days but ended up burned anyway. I was less burned using a sun blocking moisturize, baby Coppertone sunblock – something like 50 and wearing a hat. I always wear a hat, just remember to put something on the tops of your ears!
Thanks for your response…. I just bought some SolBar online and will be testing it out for a while… might have better luck… I agree… got to get a good hat as well…. my golf visor just doesn’t do enough… looking for a great looking straw hat that doesn’t make me look like a dork on the course…..
I live in Colorado where the sun is strong and I always try to use sunscreen, even thought I hate the greasy feel of most of them. I was using neutrogena untill I read an atricle in my newspaper reguarding sunscreens. According to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention you should avoid sunscreens that contain oxybenzone (also known as benzophenone-3) Nearly all Americans are contaminated with this popular sunscreen chemical. It was deemed safe in the 1970′s, but new evidence has linked it to allergies, hormone disruption and cell damage. It helps other chemicals penetrate the skin. You should choose sunscreens with zinc or titanium oxide as the active ingredients. Finding them is not easy. They also say use spf 30 or higher and at least 7 percent zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for broad-spectrum protection. They say to avoid sprays or powders so you wont inhail the chemicals. I have found sunscreen by Burts Bee’s and Arcona has a really nice tinted sunscreen.
I like the Burt’s Bees products… all natural I believe… Never heard of Arcona but will check them out as well. Thanks.
I use Burts Bee’s on my arms etc, but it’s a bit waxy and dries so fast its hard to get it blended in well, especially on the face. Arcona’s is really creamy and goes on so smoothly and I like that it’s lightly tinted. The spf is 40 ( wish it was higher) but both are made with the recomended zinc and not the bad chemicals.
I have read numerous articles on sunscreen. I found this exerpt on WebMD. Although I have found this site reliable, I always talk to my doctor about the information I have found.
SPF 100: Twice as Good As SPF 50?
SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburns, but not UVA rays, which are more closely linked to deeper skin damage. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.
It is a measure of the time it would take an individual to burn in the sun if they were not wearing sunscreen vs. the time it would take with sunscreen on.
“SPF is not a consumer-friendly number,” says Florida dermatologist and American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) spokesman James M. Spencer, MD. “It is logical for someone to think that an SPF of 30 is twice as good as an SPF of 15, and so on, but that is not how it works.”
According to Spencer, an SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays, an SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays, and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays.
“After that, it just gets silly,” he says.
Sunscreens with higher SPF ratings block slightly more UVB rays, but none offers 100% protection.
Happy 4th of July to y’all. Have a fun & safe holiday!
