Ok, I’m closer to 60 than 50, don’t have an office job, but for heavens sake, I still want to wear stylish shoes with a heel significantly lower than 4 inches without cringing at the price. Where do you find them?

I wear my moccasins from Kenneth Cole almost every day. They’re lined with plush on the inside but are sturdy enough for lots of walking! They’re so comfy, it’s almost like wearing slippers!

I wear an 11 Narrow — and I’m tall. I fear manufacturers have written off women like me because it’s not worth it to them to make odd sized shoes.

I’m currently recovering from having a bone spur removed from one of my little toes – I ran into a chair about 25 years ago when I was pregnant with my first daughter (at the “Great White Whale stage) and ever after I could put nothing except flip-flops on my foot without creating great discomfort. I became a pro at walking as if my feet didn’t hurt, and can’t tell you how many Dr. scholl’s little sponge cheerios I plastered on that damn toe! Now I like a moderate heel or flats, but you’re right that they look so – yuck – all Mary Jane and thick rubber soles, or are so expensive they ought to be made of gold!
I recommended Footsmart in the resource “Shopping Around” section of “Steal This Style”. But, I disagree that their shoe styles have merit–just all the wonderful stuff they feature to make your feet way more comfortable.

Please do, I have to wear these chunky shoes everywhere, I have to have a steel shank in my shoes so I can walk. I wear Rockports but they are just good walking shoes, I have 3 pairs, 2 black and one brown but they look half way decent with pants but wearing anything else is out of the question. Pleae design a good sexy looking show with a good arch support for us older ladies I am 63, older in years but not old in mind, yet! Betty
I have plantar and was wondering if anyone has a shoe that is wedding ready. My son marries in August. I have the dress but need blackshoes. Preferably not stocky heavy support shoes….
Timid, I have plantar also. I wear dressy flats or sandal for nice occassions, but velcro my shoe inserts to my dress shoes and that works fine for me. My everyday shoes for summer are SAS sandals for comfort, but they are too chunky for dressing up. Hope this helps you.
Thaks. GIGI never thought about velcro ing them in. Will be on my feet most of 6 hours and don’t want to be an embarrassment. How long have you had it and are there any things you have done to help? I am in my 3rd year and have let it rule my feet. Tired of that.
Timid I have had it for almost 11 years. My physician says it will go away after awhile in most cases, but about 25% do not. I wear shoes and my inserts all the time and never go barefoot. I get an injection maybe once a year or less when it really is bothering me. Putting ice on my instep helps if I have been on my feet for a lot of hours. I do wear good support shoes and only wear my dressy shoes for short periods of time and put the inserts in with the velco. I have 2 pair of inserts and one is a little less bulkier and those I use in my dress shoes. Good luck. I hope yours will not last as long as mine has. Try the inserts and velcro, I think it should work well for you.
Yes – SAS sandals are great. I’ve had a pair I’ve worn for years & they are still going great, but getting a little worn looking. They are soooo comfortable. I’m going to be investing in another pair or two soon.
I need arch support in flats.
I would go check out Crocs.com. For a long time all they had were the huge clogs or flip-flops. Now they have a ton of other options including dressy shoes. Just look at all the options on their site. I wear crocs about 300 days a year. It’s true they are on the plain side. However, being able to walk around town all day pain free without needing to kick off your shoes every ten minutes is definitely worth it.
E-bay! The best brands are Helle, Privo (sport shoes), Nike Air, Clarks, Born. You can find them at great prices on ebay all new in boxes for half the price of retail. These brands are nice ones, well made, comfortable. The “Helle” brand is European and they have some really nice heels that you can stay in all day.
You and I have the same taste. My closet is full of Privo and Clarks, along with Nike Air for the gym!
I’m a sixty year old (is that possible??) innkeeper and am on my feet from 6:30AM until 8:30PM seven days a week. For shoes, I absolutely swear by Ecco’s. They have been such a lifesaver. Fairly expensive but worth every single penny!

Please try superfeet.com. I had plantar fascitis so bad I thought I had to quit nursing. That was in 1987. I’m still working on cement floors in the OR . I have major knee issues and shoes with any heel at all makes my knees hurt when I walk. It’s a huge drag but the reality. The only shoes I can wear are Keens. They are cute, stylish and comfortable. http://www.keenfootwear.com/
REI carries them. Not sure where you are, but its important to try them on as each style is slightly different. After you know what size you like you can order them online at Zappo and other places.
I swear by Keen since I found them in a San Francisco shoe store called Shuz about 3 years ago. I had moved to the city and did a lot of walking. I developed plantar and nothing helped until I started wearing Keen all the time. Also, instead of wearing regular slippers or flip flops (or going barefoot–also a “no-no” for plantar) I bought a pair of Haflinger slippers. They are not cheap, but what a difference this has made.
Keen’s website has plenty of styles to choose from. Some styles are also available through The Walking Store (in many malls and online). By the way, The Walking Store has many great comfortable (and stylish) shoes. Some are dressy. Unfortunately, I have very tiny feet, and the manufacturers of the dressy shoes don’t cut for my size, but the rest of you ladies are sure to find something you’ll like. If you’re in San Francisco, check out Shuz on Geary near Union Square. Like The Walking Store, they carry lots of comfortable and stylish brands for women like us! I miss them since I moved again.
I find that Ecco are indeed the most comfertable show I wear. And I wear thr only pain I hae everyday for some part of it anyway.
And I wear the only pair of normal shoes I wear all day. I used to belong to a privet gofl club and I had ecco golf shoes that are the second most wonderflly comfertable shoes after the sandles I just bought for $125.00.

I am also on the “fighting side” of 50 and a Pre-Kindergarten teacher which means on my feet 6 hours out of a 6 1/2 hour day! I love Clarks and have been using them for years. They have dressier styles but I wear their casuals more often than not. The price is about right as well. When you talk about ECCO’s, Sofft’s, Borns, etc. they are too expensive for my teacher salary. 6PM has been having some magnificent sales on Clarks and Privos. Good luck!
Colehaan, Taryn Rose, and Ecco are the brands many women go to for comfort. But beware–there are definately some– but few styles that truly pass the muster. I think this area of the market is severely under-served when you assess the need. For my clients who are willing to “invest” in good AND stylish shoes I take them to Tods and Prada Sport– at times. Nike and Puma have great sneakers as well.
I have my “models” wear a nice selection in both my books–if you need visuals . Many of these ladies had foot problems of one sort or another.
I have problems finding shoe that are flats that have arch support, I have bad feet and I also had surgey on MY left foot that was dealing with Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction (PTTD) now I have to wear insert and with these insert I have to go to a bigger shoe size. Also my left knee is going out on me the dr told me I couldn’t walk any more I have to ride a bike and do water aerobics. I just turn 60 yesterday. I would like to know where I can buy shoes that are stylish also.
Hi Picklelady (that name’s GOT to have a story) I don’t know where you live, but here in the DC area lots of us have good luck at The Walking Company stores, Comfort Shoes stores (both in multiple area shopping malls) and a regional chain called Richey Shoes. A considerable part of Richey’s customer base are people with prosthetics and custom made arch supports. And there’s always Aerosoles-they have stores in the outlet malls in addition to their regular retail shops. Do not overlook asking your shoe repairman for recommendations. Those folks are great resources for finding not only shoe stores, but good places to get luggage, too! Good luck – I know there is not much in life that’s worse than aching feet.

If you spend the money and go and haver a pair of proper inserts made they fit in almost any shoe without going to a bigger shoe. My daughter and I both wear them and it makes a world of difference to my standing and walking abilities as it supports you individual feet and supports your arches. Sometimes it takes time to get the right person to fit you. My last pair was created from a sports clinic, previos a Chiropractors office. Good luck Naot sandles have removable soles that you can put in your orthotic.
