I used to love Bare Minerals which gave a glow, but my skin has changed over the last few years and mineral powder on 50+ skin looks awful. I’d love to hear about foundation that makes 50+ face look good and quenched. Has anyone tried Clinique Dewy makeup? Any other good brands that make 50+ skin look good? I dont want to fall for advertising that claims “extreme lift” when all it does is life money from my wallet. Thanks, Leah
I can give you the combinations that works unerringly for me. It’s Natural FX water-based Foundation and Setting FX Translucent Setting Powder.
For less coverage, I use Jane Iredale Dream Tint tinted moisturizer or Lavera Naturkosmetik Trend Sensitiv fluid make-up. I use the Setting FX loose power with these two products as welll.
Before appoying anything, I use a silicon-based primer on my skin, such as Smash Box Photo Finish or an oil-control primer like Absence from Jane Iredale.
You can get all these products at Nordstrom or Sephora, except for the Lavera which I get at a health food store.
This has been a long quest and I finally feel my skin and my makeup are in balance.

I have used Mary Kay skin care products and cosmetics since I was 21 and I’m 54 now. I think it has helped my skin. I can’t be sure, maybe I was born with my skin and the products have nothing to do with it – but, how would I know? I get compliments on my facial skin too. I say it’s the cosmetics and people say, no, your skin is especially soft and smooth. I use their soap in the morning when I wash my face, the age defying lotion and the moisturizing foundation, along with the blush, eyeliner and eyeshadow. I also use their sun block/moisturizer in the summer on a regular basis.
For daytime, I like the MK Tinted Moisturizer.
I have also used MK skin care since I was in my early 20′s. I am 53 now and I am told continuisly that I look much younger. I do attribute this to taking care of my face for all these years – I still use MK in case it’s the products!
I agree. Doesn’t it make sense to use one skin-care line consistently to get the results that the company claims? By using a combination of different products from different companies, we raise the risk of a “fight” occuring on our skin due to ingredients not working well with those from the other companies. Then what happens? We have no idea which product was the “culprit”. I’ve used Mary Kay consistently for 20+ years. People never guess my ‘real age’!
I know, when I tell people that I’m 54, they usually respond that they thought I was “early 40s”!
I use Clinique Superfit it seems to last longer However I so get facials and the lady that does them told me in the winter, wear night cream under your foundation Such as Revale’skin I also use a Clarisonic Brush for my face in the shower I can say I do get a lot of complements on my skin. Of course it is followed by “For your age,” haha!
I use Lancome and have for used(however it is very expensive). I like the idea of a Clarisonic Brush.
In the winter I, too, have gone to the heavier cream even during the day and it has made a huge difference in the application of my foundation, whether mineral or cream. HUGE. I was a little reluctant because I tend toward oily skin, but here in my 50′s I am seeing that even my oily skin is drying out in the winter with the cold wind and the inside heat constantly going. It works for me!
Leah: I think we have to start with the skin or no make-up looks good. For me, exfoliation is the key. I’ve washed my face (body too) with a natural olive oil soap, or even ivory when I was younger, and a facial loofa (softened before use by boiling in salt water). Morning & evening I soap the loofa and wash face and neck with circular motions, pat dry and immediately apply cream. Creams? I’ve used any that strike my fancy. For years it was Ponds, but I’ve used L’oreal’s and Olay’s regenerating creams for some time now.
Make-up. Most days, I just wear mascara and red lipstick. When I ‘do’ my face, I use L’oreal True Match make-up and apply with a light hand.
Janney: I used Lancome some years back and they have the best mascara, but you’re right they are pricey – not in my current budget.
ageless: That brush sounds interesting, probably works on same premise as my loofa?
Perle
Hi Perles,
What ‘brush’ are you referring to?
Thanks,
Geralyne
I also find the mineral powder foundations don’t look nice on 50+ skin – I feel as though I look like my grandma!
Having ‘never ever had any oil in my skin’, I use Mary Kay Tinted Moisturizer for day, and FC Foundation for dry skin in the evening, but I think it’s also important to exfoliate regularly & use a hydrating moisturizer.
That’s what I do too. I use Mary Kay Tinted Moisturizer for day with blush and eye shadow. I would love to use lipstick, but I have never worn lipstick – it seems to make my lips chapped for some reason. I stick with simple which is foundation and blush. That’s about it for me.
I like Lauren Huttens makeup made for older skin, my 22 yr likes it too because it is not heavy.
Hi, Leah:
I love minerals, but you are right about putting them on dry skn. I use lactic acid 12% and then use Estee Lauder double-wear makeup with a little Neutrogena sunblock for extra-protection. Then I use the minerals to cover up the imperfections. The result is amazing. I look 10 years younger–no one can believe the difference. You can get the lactic acid through your MD. It is commonly prescribed for elderly folks with thin dry skin and is also included in a lot of the expensive formulations. I think it is a beter deal to order this stuff and add whatever I want to it. Sometimes I will put a little retin A in it and smooth it around my lips as I hate runny lipstick! I like the EsteeLauder makeup because it lasts a long time and forms agreat base to hold the minerals when I “pat” them on over the spots that need it!
Is the lactic acid less drying than glycolic? Also, exactly what does the retin A do – improves the lip/skin or just prevents the lipstick from bleeding?
Yes, Trixie, Lactic Acid is less drying. It really hydrates nicely. The Retin A exxfoliates and also works to get trid of wrinkles. I hate wrinkles!!!

Thanks – I’ll have to try it! Retin A is only prescription though, right?
I’ve recently had luck with Makeup For Ever High Definition Foundation and Primer. I mix the foundation with a little moisturizer before applying. The primer helps with undereye circles and I don’t use a concealer as they just seem to settle in wrinkles. I’m still trying all sorts of moisturizers to find the one that works best for me. My skin is very dry and the winter weather makes it even worse. I moisturize night and day religiously.
Marketers take note: it is clear from these posts that VN women don’t vote the party line. We try different products and use the ones that work the best for us, often mixing products from several different lines. Also of interest in this disucssion is the number of times Mary Kay Cosmetics comes up, since that is a line you have to buy directly from a distributor and isn’t available in stores. The key word is “individuality” and everyone is learning to see what works and won’t hesitate to discard everything that doesn’t (as so many have said about mineral powders).
I concur! I dare say millions of women have cosmetic/skin care “graveyards” in drawers. Stuff bought, not used, or didn’t like after all, but feel stuck or that they’ll be given a hard time if they try to return it to the stores. Consumers rights state that we CAN return and get money back – regardless of the store policy. But who wants to go through all that? That’s another reason for having a personal consultant in Mary Kay Cosmetics. You try before you buy (free facial); 100% buy back – either all your money returned, or return product for another one. Oft times it is a trial and error – even in the best lines of product. We want quality for our hard-earned money, and in the economy such as it is now, that that has become paramount.
Consultants don’t lose anything from this. I would prefer that customers return products they don’t like, as I want them to love it as much as I do!
Have problem deleting this – could only edit.
I understand as well. When Mary Kay introduced Mineral Powders I loved it. It’s the best I’ve seen yet. But because my skin is blotchy plus a few of those ugly ‘age’ spots, I felt it took too many layers to give the coverage I desired.
Solution: After cleansing, and applying any supplements, moisturizer, and concealer, use either a liquid or cream-to-powder foundation perfectly matched to your skin-tone. With the liquid foundation, ‘set it’ with the mineral powder foundation – for a very smooth finish. No – there is no problem using layers of foundations – it’s called ‘masking’. The little extra time is SO worth the final look.
In winter weather, hydrating our skin is most important. And several others have mentioned applying more than one moisturizer. Good advice. And apply moisturizer before retiring in the evening. Your skin will thank you!
Oh my – have you tried the new Even Complexion Mask??? I don’t think it will get rid of age spots, but it makes my face feel so smooth, hydrated, & fresh. I am so addicted, I’ll have to find a ’12 step program’ – LOL! It’s the same with Satin Hands – totally addicted.
Hey Trixie. No I haven’t yet. Addicted and no need for a 12 step program – LOL! Have you noticed an improvement in your complexion yet?
Interesting that these comments are under the subject of Finding the perfect foundation! Must be because we can’t have a perfect foundation without preparation.
I always say, “The best make-up is good skin care.”
I AGREE! But I seem to have a different ritual. I exfoliate with a hemp cloth (from a Natural Food store) every day — in summer 2x and in winter just once. I use T-cel dandruff shampoo on the cloth! It is removes the bacteria which naturally grows on your face and removes dead skin cells as well. Sometimes I use Dove if it is very dry. I follow that with either Calendula salve (use a small amount and rub your hands together until they feel warm) massaged into my skin and neck vigorously! Everyone thinks I am crazy, but it works! Often I just use the hemp cloth (from a Natural Food store). They last a long time, just throw them into the wash with a little bleach. When my natural store has it, I use HONEY HOUSE PROPOLIS SALVE from Honey House Apiaries. It has calendula, plantain, raw honey, beeswax and comfrey root. It is quite thick and I was put off by this at first, but my friend insisted I use it in place of my calendula once in a while — especially in dry winter conditions. You know what, this kind of waxy stuff is WONDERFUL! I rub it vigorously into my face, neck and around my mouth and ears. People say my skin is beautiful. I love that because, I spent 30 years working out of doors in the Southwest, mostly without sunscreen.
While my skin is feeling that nice soft feeling, I use Physcian’s Formula blending powder (a brush is included) which does not contain the shiny minerals that make skin look old. A little Revlon powder/cream blush in a nice rose smoothed on by hand, some mascara if I want or some of the salve on my eyelashes and I am good to go. My lipstick is usually Burt’s Bees lip balm.
Sounds different, but takes no time at all and is good for my skin. I feel lucky to have stumbled onto this routine about 20 years ago! SW sun is a killer on you skin!
Oh, and frequent facials with green tea and milk are great, and clay of course. I love the lactic acid idea, I wonder if I can find some here. Thanks for all the info ladies!
I agree, exfoliation & moisturization are the keys! The only other thing that I would add is an SPF of 20 or higher. I also use a tinted lip balm with sunscreen – really makes a difference.
