The absolute best place to find great clothes in petite sizes is Talbots. Coldwater Creek has some, too, and I occasionally find something there, but Talbots is less boxy and old lady looking to me.
The most flattering clothes are always the ones you feel best in. Go to your nearest Talbots, or Coldwater Creek, or Chico’s and ask a sales person to put together some outfits for you. I used to work in retail, and it was always such fun to have a customer who was willing to try on things they wouldn’t normally choose for themselves. The worst that can happen is you get a good laugh out of the ones that don’t work on you. :-) It’s fashion, have fun with it.
Oh, and don’t forget the accessories. A gorgeous scarf or statement necklace can make a ho-hum outfit really smashing!

Where do you shop for age-appropriate petite clothing?
I was always a die hard Chicos fan because of the stretchy factor and the concealing blacks that match. However, I have learned that black is very draining on the overall look and lets face it…who wants to wear black with so many funerals ahead of us! Why mourn early?
I am happy to say I have switched to Coldwater Creek because they have lovely styles that are not too boxy (like chicos jackets) and they have DRESSES! WOW! Very hard to find anymore.
I want to wear a dress to church and nice dresses are hard to find in my size. Mostly the racks are stacked with sportswear for the busy professional who wants to wear pants to work.
I wholeheartedly agree…Coldwater Creek is the way to go!
I’m 5’1″ and have a small frame. I’ve learned that my best friend, fashion-wise, is my neighborhood dry cleaner. Because I buy my clothes at Loehmanns/TJ Maxx/Marshalls/Nordstrom Rack, I can take some of the money I save to have them professionally altered. I’ve had tops shortened, sleeves shortened, hems taken up, sides tucked in, etc. It’s like having a wardrobe designed for me, and I’ll still saving money.
