all of the above.   I wore them last year, but do not see so many this year, at least in So Florida.  I usually wear them with a long off the shoulder blouse and even high heels.

Hello Lynette:  I agree completely.. All of the above sounds great to me.  I think whatever you wear with your leggings as long as you feel good , you’re makin a statement.  Just add some bangles, large hoop earrings.  I wear them all the time and I just know I look good.  I live in Calif. I see so many other woen wearing them too. ,,,,with all of the above.

I don’t have any but yes I would wear them.  Black with a tunic type top.  The right fabric and leggings I think can be attractive on most anyone….along with the right top.

When I first heard they were back in style I thought I might be too old to wear them without looking foolish. But, I had to try them on. And, I found that they actually make me look thinner than my regular black jeans. I’m a shortie, so I like that they seem to lengthen my legs. It helps that they look nothing like the leggings we wore in the 80′s. They’re really just skinny black pants. If you don’t already own a pair, check out the ‘Simply Vera’ collection at Kohl’s.

I think I’m hesitant to try them because I never wore the leggings that were so popular back in the 80s, so the feel and look of the leggings seem so strange to see on myself. I feel like I’m half-naked when I put on a tunic over them and wonder how I’ll ever be able to walk outside. I am small and, like you beej55, they make my legs look long. When I put them on with my squashed suede boots, I feel as if I look like Peter Pan! And when I tried on a short dress, I felt like I had nothing on. Oy vey! On the other hand, they feel so comfortable to wear and, if nothing else, I suppose I can sleep in them or wear them under my jeans in the winter months for extra warmth. I am hoping that when I begin to see you ladies out and about in them this Fall, I’ll get up my courage to join you!  ^_^  Thanks!

I prefer the opaque tights…standard Fall and winter attire, under denim and other cute skirts.dresses….living in the cold north, I have every color possibly available….I have leggings too….tunics over those.  I am 5’2 and I just love the look…

I’d like to make a distinction then, between leggings – which are basically footless tights and are also on sale everywhere, and skinny black pants.   No one past puberty not at dance class should wear the former, IMO.

I did buy myself a pair of straight legged black jeans the other day to celebarate breaking the 140 point in weight (current weight 139 and hopefully falling).  I’ll wear them tucked into tall boots in the winter.  And also to dance class.  Cause I wouldn’t be caught dead in leggings.  Not even in dance class :-)

Right, some stores call the footless tights leggings….I have actually found the best (jeans-type leggings) for me are from WalMart, because they also carry petite lengths…..but I love my tights….

What brand of jean-type leggings did you find at Walmart? I have White Stag stretch jeans that fit almost like leggings – are they what you mean? I’ve been wearing them or ones even tighter for years – love them! Sooo comfy – just need a top to cover the bum and I’m off and running. I’m just over 5′ and altho’ short, my legs are long in proportion (opposite to most short people) and the tight jeans/leggings make me look taller and slimmer.

I bought those too!! 1 pr in mid calf length & 1 pr in long.  Sorry Stella, I love leggings as long as the butt cheeks aren’t hanging out or the tummy can be seen!  I have no shape to my middle, but I good legs & skinny ankles.  By geez, I’m going to show them off.

I love a good length poncho or wrap with the too.  I wish I could wear little boots, but the arthritis in my feet prevent me from wearing them, so slippery flats is what I have to rely on.  I call it the Laura Petrey look.  Anyone remember?

I agree Sunblossom!  I tried a pair from WalMart’s with a kind of elastic band as a waistband, and very long, very dark blue!  In a 6!  I loved them — when I returned, there were 2 pair but I had forgotten my card!  So, there were 2 pair, and I am hoping that they will be there tomorrow!  But not getting those particular ones, give their Faded Glory skinny jeans a chance, very nice and at $10.00 a pair, in P M & L, light blue, dark blu and black, they are hard to pass up.  I am still trying to figure out if I can use some of my sweaters from previous years — They are oversized and [shame!] Cashmere, sooo I am going to try.  Also the shoe thingy is sort of a problem — do you girls think that an inexpensive pair of squishy boots are tacky?  I mean pretend leather!  LOL I am always preaching to my friends, my kids, my husband and anyone who will listen that back problems come from bad shoes as much as anything else!  Soooo you see the problem :)

Hey Linda:  I really like what you said about the leggings.  Just pull out some those last year items and put them on top of those leggings and you will make a staement that will be unbelievable.  Grab one of those hats from last year,  tip it to the side, put a scarf, bangles on your wrist, boots on your feet or any kind of shoes you chose.  I forgot to say, you can put on a chain belt on top of one of those sweaters or long blouses and you will be ready .  Watch out sis.  T.T.Y.S.

Leggings can be tricky on older women. Unless you’re super-fit and toned they look like “mutton dressed as lamb” instead of chic . Yes they are comfy and at home alone you can throw on a big cozy sweater and feel great while you cook, read, watch TV or work on your laptop but forget about ordinary leggings for streetwear or work. Try the much newer  jeggings which are a morph of jeans and leggings. They come in sturdier denim and there are cargo style jeggings too. They have the constructed top jeans do and more substantial fabric with stretch so there’s more compression and hold at the thigh and tummy where we tend to need it most. They come in a range of denims, black, khaki, greys and tans so they work with everything. Look for styles with a higher rise so you bypass muffin tops and belly bulge. Jeggings have the same narrow body-hugging fit and look great with boots or ballet flats. Throw on a long slim sweater or layer up with tanks, tees and a long cardigan and you have the same effect with a lot more style and flattery.

For all those interested in getting a pair of jeggings- every jeans brand from J Brand to James Jeans to Paige makes them, so does Chicos believe it or not. You can find them at topshop.com, macys.com, bluefly.com, zappos.com and at any department store where you’d usually find jeans.

I just bought a pair of JBrand high waisted brown ones called Major. Some have a side zip at the ankle, others do not but do look for basic black, chocolate brown and grey in a variety of fabrics.

That is possible for those that have a family history of being skinny. When you do exercise, and diet, and you still don’t lose. Well, we are human also, love to dress in style, and deserve to have pretty things also.

So for all you women that love leggings! Go for it, and have a lot of fun wearing them!

I don’t have “a family history of being skinny” – I don’t eat ANY junk. As my friend puts it “no food with ingredients”. I eat mostly raw fresh produce and occasional lean animal protein, and I do use whole milk and butter. Very few people on the planet would be overweight eating what I eat, hiking several times a week, doing yoga and tai chi…it’s fine if people choose to not do those things, but it isn’t, for most people, “family history” unless it’s a family history of bad eating habits. And everyone does deserve pretty things, regardless of their lifestyle choices, but the question is, are leggings on fat people actually pretty? Are they pretty on ANYONE? Yes, you can throw a baggy tunic over them and call it a day, but is that actually attractive? How about a pair of gold metallic sandals and some ethnic-looking jewelry? It’s definitely a look I see, but is it in any way a good look?

Well, we all struggle with something.  I envy you your discipline in being able to take such good care of your physical body.  I was actually raised to eat healthy food.  Our Halloween candy lasted a whole year and we probably had two pop a year.  Snacks were always fresh fruit and veggies.  And I’ve engaged in a lot of health programs.  Sometimes I’ve even been successful.  I could write a book on healthy nutrition and exercise.  Unfortunately, I’m still struggling with the discipline aspect.  I’m very disciplined as far as work goes, my relationships, paying bills, money management, but taking care of my physical body as far as food and enough exercise goes, often eludes me.  One of the prices I pay is not allowing myself to wear leggings.  I tried some on a few days ago and very quickly took them off vowing never to do anything like that again!

And yes, I have seen women wearing them with a sweater or a tunic and it looking very attractive.  But then I guess we all have a different opinion on what’s attractive too.

Oh, you call it pop! I haven’t heard that since I was growing up in the midwest US. I love that.

Yes, we all have a different take on what’s attractive but aaaargh, leggings? Or worse, “jeggings”? Really, are we doing this? It just seems like one of those things where we’ll look back at those pictures and say “what was I thinking?”, don’t you think? Like the terrible 80′s pictures I want to destroy…

Hey, it could be worse.  I’ve just been checking out some of the fashions from earlier centuries.  Bustles and panniers and hoop skirts and whalebone corsets and bustles.  Yeesh!!  I am so glad we’re not there anymore.  I like that we have lots of choices as to what we want and can wear.  And I wear what I want (Actually which is the same way I live) to please one person only:  ME!!!!!!

I think it depends on how things are worn too.  I’ve seen women wear things that they just should not.  The only reason I wouldn’t tell them to rethink their wardrobe is that I wouldn’t want to embarrass them anymore than they are already doing so to themselves.  I have seen leggings and jeggings worn very well and look great on some women.  You most definitely have to have the legs for them though (and wear them with flattering co-ordinates).  I don’t and I know I don’t.

I like leggings with a long shirt. I have worn this look this summer. Haven’t worn it once the weather gets cooler as I feel the big sweater and the belt and the leggings make me look bigger than I am . I am almost 6ft tall.

I hear ya about all those voices!  I am short and sometimes prefer younger clothes, specially tops, The voices continue to keep me guessing!  But I am learning!  If you can get through this tirade, I am 65 and had BC in 1987, many surgeries, many implants broken, etc. etc. 13 surgeries later, I decided I would just go on with one boobie.  Now, that boobie [small as it is now and always was!]  I was told recently that my should would begin to droop too!  That is without a prosthetic!  Sooo, I had a shot of tequilla and went for a “fitting”.  Now isn’t that a strange name?  All these fake boobies of every material, size shape imaginable and dozens of bras, also of every kind and color [even Cami bras!  Who knew?!].  AND DO YOU KNOW WHAT, IT WAS SOOOO FUN!  Donna the fitter was wonderful and funny and now, I am currently “test-driving a couple and WoW, I always thought of myself as feminine, love pretty things, SOFT clothes, ethnic jewelry, yoga, etc.  But, well age does do!  So, I never thought I would EVER WEAR A BRA, LET ALONE A BRA THAT IS KIND OF LIKE THE ONES MY MOTHER WORE!  BUT PRETTIER.  And I feel very good in them. And, I doo notice that I am standing straighter!  I DO NOT THINK I WILL WEAR THEM IN YOGA, AFTER ALL A SHOULDER STND OR A BRIDGE COULD BE A TAD ODD!

In New York City black leggings are so popular that many stores were sold  out by the end of August. I’ve found that a long  cardigan, pullover or tunic topping a pair of leggings takes off 10 pounds. I l found that boots  work better for the young so I wear my leggings with ballet flats.

I’m in pretty good shape, and like leggings, but when I discovered the more jeans-like variety (after reading about it on VN last winter!) I find I like those better.  I’m with the opaque tight wearers with skirs or dresses, my black “jeggings” or fitted jeans, or a pretty thick stretch legging.  Love short boots with them.  The key, for me, is to wear a LONG ENOUGH top!  We are not kids; I like a tunic to come below where my legs look like they’re about to meet (if that makes sense).

OH I love my leggings.  I get so many compliments when I wear them.  I love the ones with the designs and especially like the ones that make my legs look I have tattoes.  Although I don’t like tattoes the designs are really cute.  They are mostly flowers.  I even wear the designed panty hose with the fishnet and window pane design.  There are so many designs in the stores now and I dress my age but cute.  I go dancing and my legs attract the attention of the men in an awesome kind of way.  They love for us to be classy and sexy at the same time.

I just bought two pair at Coldwater Creek.  They are really nice.  Pull on with a wide band, no pockets or zippers, they fit beautifully and come in black and navy.  Go get a pair!

I love leggings, they look great under sweater dresses with boots of flats, long sweaters or tunic tops. I most certainly will have several styles and colors in my fall and winter wardrobe.

I am just under 5′ and I love leggings… finding the right footwear is a little challenging. I have Gap ballet flats and another pair of patent leather flatsWe can all enjoy the look, we just have to ask in stores and ask women when you see a look you love, how she put it together. You’d be delivering a sweet compliment at the same time! I also love the skinny jeans and I’m not skinny….just have to find the right straight leg for your shape…again ask at the Gap, ask other women and especially when you see someone who has a look you like, engage them in a conversation, you’ll both feel great!!!! Sometimes it’s smart to go shopping with someone who ahs style, they can introduce you to items you would never consider. It’s fun to update your look and doesn’t have to cost much either. Consignment stores are a great resource for tops and leggings aren’t expensive. Enjoy feeling fabulous, you deserve it, no matter your size, age or shape!

I love leggings and tight trousers, and look good in them. They are not for all women, but if you pair them with a baggy top, belted or fab layers they can still look good. They are perfect for tucking into tight boots and wearing with flats or heels. They are very practical and can spice up a summer dress so you can wear it through the fall. I love them

I’m short and fat and I wore leggings in the 80′s and I wear them now. They look good on me because I have thinner legs and I’m bulkier on top so the top which is usually longish, big, sweater, etc…tends to make the whole of me look smaller. I usually wear my sneakers to work and they look great, also good with crocs.

try them! And it doesn’t have to be just for casual wear. You can dress them up depending on what you wear on top and what you accessorize with. Have fun!

Hello Sistas:  I am 5ft.3in.  and I feel so good in my leggings.  It really depends on what you wear with them.  I wear mine with my cafgans and a scarf to match, some of my dresses or shirts have thigh high splits with leggings, long oversized blouses.  There are so many different ways, as so many say you can dress them up or down.  I think the main thing is to feel good about what you’re wearing.  Make sure your colors match and everything fits well and sista you’ve got it going on. LilDEE you sound good.

See lou-you know how to wear them for comfort and warmth & that is what I love about them.  I had to laugh though I read one poster say she didn’t want to look like an apple on a stick-it brought back a visual or memory of this woman I worked with in the 80′s:

When leggings had ran their course and were going out of syle – she was finally going to wear them.  The funny thing is that she was maybe 5′ and apple shaped with very short hair.  She had 3 set’s of a man’s high necked short sleeve T-shirts-they were about hip length.  Along with them she wore these skin tight leggings in the colors to match the T-shirts with white “slouch” socks and reebock runner’s. So she had a purple “set”; a red “set” and a blue “set”-she was a sweat heart I liked her very much but the image that came to my 30 year old mind was - she looked like an “M & M”.  I know-bad me!!

The main thing was she loved herself in them and was comfortable in them and that was all that mattered – for office wear-”not so much”-but she loved them.

Hey Sista:  Like you said, she felt comfortable in them.  I do feel we can take someting’s too far, but you know I must constantly remind myself that we don’t all have the same taste in clothes, or style, but my thing is I love them anyhow.  I think I am a classy dresser, but to some I may look like an idiot, but all I can say is love me anyhow.

Oh wow. I have never been aware of fashions…jeggings? what are those? Leggings…the footless things or are you referring to leg warmers…I had a pair of black heavy leg warmers in the 80′s. I wore them with long skirts. Sometimes over my levis and boots (knees to ankles)…when I was on my ex’s motorcycle. Where I live it is always fall or winter..only have 2 seasons here…sometimes we are granted a few days of summer. This year I think we had 5 days of summer…I wil more than likely just keep wearing my levis and cowboy boots….those are the most comfortable clothes…but I do have some cool blouses to go with the levis and boots…but what are jeggings?????

I guess I am just a little confused about this, and probably in the Tim Gunn camp – I don’t see the advantage over actual jeans, skinny jeans that fit properly, and a white t shirt and a cool jacket…why would I want to wear these things? They don’t seem flattering although I do get that it’s easier to wear stretchy stuff. I don’t think that’s helpful though. It seems like what you would wear when you plan to go to a restaurant and eat too much – stretchy clothes seem dangerous.

Leggings are knit fabric. Jeggings are skinny skinny stretch jeans that are a cross between leggings and jeans.  Jeggings is a fashion term.  Hope that helps

Thank you Diane! I kept trying to figure out what was what…i am not fashion conscious as you can tell. I spent too much time mucking stalls and riding horses…I guess to pay attention to fashion..but thank you anyway..All I could picture is leg warmers…Now those I know what they are! Thanks again.

I guess you can say that I am a big fan of leggings because I am pass 65 and I have pain in my joints and to keep them my legs warm feels very good.  I don’t wear pants, I just don’t like the way I look in them  It is my belief that when you are older , you need to cover up as much as possible.  I was once young and loved to expose my body, but now …what can I say.

Yes, I have already worn black leggings with a white tunic top and also with a short little dress. The key to making it work is to make sure your rear-end and top of thighs are covered.  The look is long over lean – not just came from the gym.  I was just in NYC this week and was surprised at women of all ages pairing leggings quite successfully.

This is the only downfall.  I just got a pair by a.n.a. through JC Penney.  They’re awesome and look good on.  They have rear pockets, which I’ll use for my phone, but I like having pockets also.

Okay, i don’t know, I just wish we could all take an oath not to become Those Women, the old women with crazily dyed hair and metalic sandals and jeggings or leggings and tunics and lipstick that doesn’t quite match where our lips are.  Can’t we be better than this stuff? Smarter, funnier, more interesting? Find a uniform that works for you. Wear it. Channeled straight out of my mainstream telly, which I’m addicted to, Jamie Lee Curtis on the Nate Berkus show, reworded by me of course: pack for a two week vacation in your own climate in this season. What you pack will be what you love. Recycle the rest. Do this every season. You will only have the clothes you love.

Seriously, would you have “jeggings”? Well, if so then they make the cut.

It’s a great reality check on wardrobe.

You are so right Tink –I am a consignment store and good quality Thrift Shop junky — found several pair that I love and know will not shrink, etc. of very good brands — things are soo inexpensive that I am always tempted, but what I do is to go through my closet EVERY week and always find something I have not worn or do not plan to wear any time soon, so it goes along with me to the shops!   That way, I like what is there and do not feel guilty about having too many clothes!  And there are several charities that specialize in clothes to help those less fortunate get back up and running with clothes for jobs or just self confidence.  So check the yellow pages under Thrift stores!  A worth while place to chuck those suits or special outfits for which no special even ever occured!

Yes, I would wear legging and jeggings.  I wear what I wan’t & even in pants I never flaunt my butt-so if you tastefully and comfortably dress them your own way-enjoy them.  They are so comfy.  In the summer I wore them under dresses.  For the fall I will wear them with boots and tunics.  I am glad they are back-I loved them in the 80′s and I love them in 2010.  I don’t try to dress like I’m in my 20″s, I know I am in my 50′s and so does everyone else-so I’m not trying to prove something or please anyone but myself-Yay to leggings.

thx lou-when I wore them in the 80′s and in my 30′s I always felt so insecure and never felt good about anything I wore.  This time around I am in my 50′s and if I don’t let my legging-insecurtiy go I may not be here the 3rd time they come into fashion-so leggings it is.  Not with high heels though-ha

I loved them then and I am going to love them again — j ust went out and bought some very hippie style SHAGGY BOOTS WITH FRINGE!! They come to my knees and I LOVE THEM!  And I also bought a pair of moccs!  Pink ones!  My Native friends think I am soooo funny because I actually own real Native American beaded boots and several other types, but they are too special to wear for fun — kinda serious and an honor to have and to wear only to ceremonies.  But these are going to be GREAT FUN!  And, if anyone wants to play with this look, go online to the Minnetonka site!  FUN, FUN, FUn!
