I have dyed my hair for most of my life. My hair is almost all gray now, under the dye. I am 55 years old and would like to hear from others who have let their go gray. Will I feel like an old lady if I do it?

3 words…Jamie Lee Curtis!!!!!
I so agree about Jamie Lee Curtis!!!
I know. I’ve thought of her. And i like her candor and good sense of humor.
Wow, have you opened up a can of worms! The big VN, should I or should I not let my hair go free
Personally, I’ve been going gray since my 20′s, had one brief run where I colored it in my early 40′s, and found it to be a true pain in the tush!
Now that I’m 50, I love my salt and pepper (way more salt than pepper) hair!
Will you feel old? Only if you act old!
Refrain from dressing frumpy…make sure you get a nice haircut to play up those beautiful silver strands!
Thanks.
Think I will do what a coworker did: start using semi-permanent color for the roots, keep getting hair cuts and finally let the color fade out and Voila!
i say go for the grey. my hair is short and salt and pepper (also more salt than pepper!) i have never dyed my hair, so it wasn’t a choice of letting the grey show. it was just always there. took a photo of jamie lee curtis in to my hairdresser to have a cut like hers. i think it looks good on women who have short, grey/silver hair.
Bluejay, I have a very short boy cut with patches of silver/white and I love my hair. You need a well shaped cut that fixs you! I believe I look better now than when I was 40 yrs old. My hair is thinning now other then that I’m happy…TRACK
P.S. go tp search box and type in grey hair maintenence, helpful
My hair is just starting to go gray and I can’t wait until it’s completely gray. I think it’s sexy on both men and women. It took a lot of convincing for my Mom to let her gray hair show, but once she did and the compliments starting coming in – there was no turning back for her. It will be a different look and – in my opinion – a sexier look. However, how you feel – agewise – is up to you.
I’m 51 with dark brown hair and wear it short and sassy. So far few greys and I’m choosing to go natural. I used to go for in-your-face red highlights (I never was good at subtle), but I figure why expose myself to all those harsh chemicals? Now I have more money and more time for other things. Men still look at me and my partner (who has seen me with and sans highlights) tells me daily that he thinks I’m hot. I’m all about taking care of myself, but I’m not going to fight aging. I don’t need the aggravation or the wrinkles.
I read somewhere that daily doses of blackstrap molasses helps eliminate the greys. I’ve started taking the stuff to shrink my fibroid and still have greys. Maybe I haven’t been taking it long enough to see a diff, but honestly, I figure this is who I am and if people don’t like how I look, they can look elsewhere.
You’re worth loving as you are!!!
I have blonde, thick curly hair down to my waist. If there is any gray (and I haven’t seen it), I will never allow it to appear. I know there is an unwritten rule that once a woman is at least 40, she cuts her hair. I never followed anyone’s rules. It is amazing how many women my age (63) all look like cookie cutters, though.
I think every woman should wear their hair in the style and color that makes them happ! Personally, I love my salt and pepper, shoulder length hair…but any longer, and I think it would drive me crazy!
Make that happy, not happ!
I like your attitude and your partner sounds nice.
If only I didn’t feel like I have to compete with the video porn stars.
I let my hair go gray for about 2 years now. No more harsh dyes or anything like that. i wash and go. I have more gray than brown . And its ok . My hUsband likes it. i like it so for me it works. But … it took me a some time to get use to it and a few times i wanted to run to the beauty shop . but i didn’t . My hair is softer and shinner than it has been in a long time.
I’m 57 and grew my hair out with the help of my hairdresser – some low lights for awhile to avoid the ‘skunk’ look. Now, I have silver streaks, and it looks fabulous. I get lots of compliments. Last week I walked into a party and someone asked who was that woman with the great hair?!!! I am spending more time/energy on my makeup now, including eyebrows which never were important before (but are also going silver)… and wear lots of blues/whites/browns which play up my eyes and the silver in the hair. And, I feel great!
I’ve found, that with my silver hair and olive skin, grays, blacks and blues are my color! Used to be reds and pinks…but not anymore!
