I am a shoe person. However, I won’t even consider wearing most of the shoes in the magazines today, which I think are crazy, woman-hating shoes. 5″ stilettos? Towering platforms with straps up to midcalf? They’re just ugly. And, of course, brutally uncomfortable, no matter what anyone pretends. Plus there are the orthopedic considerations.
Thank heaven there are so many cute ballet flats available for those of us who don’t want to look like hookers.
How long can this fad last?

Soon I hope. I’ll never give into the pressure. Or the pain and vanity.
amen!
This will last until another “man” decides that the 5″ stiletto needs to have a new look so all the ladies that still wear them will run out and buy the latest “look”. These 5″ heels have been around for so long. I remember when I wore them and I thought I looked so hot (I mighta looked like a hooker, not sure). There were even pumps I could wear for work, I think they were called English Leather or something. I almost couldn’t walk in them, specially if I was in a hurry. I’d love to have a video of me trying to do that now (pretty funny!)
I love the way you put “man” in quotation marks.
Yeah, I can see you bent over grunting and trying to buckle a pair of those damn things. Motercycle boots are much more practical. Lol,
Exactly. Every now and then I sneak my motorcycle boots into my daily wardrobe at the office. if you are clever about the accessories and pant length, no one usually notices the boots.
I think we’re at the 14 minutes, ten seconds point in the five inch heel’s lifespan. You’re so right, Seawriter, it’s just another phase as have been most design innovations since DVF’s wrap dresses and the sophistication of jeans.
A five inch heel is about an inch and a half beyond excessive, and this from a woman who has worn heels all her life (when you measure in at 5’2″ you don’t have much choice; besides, I just love the way I look in heels). This winter I’ve seen the rare 5er only at restaurants, in my city many of us wear weather-appropriate footwear to our destinations and then change into our shoes, or wear the shoes only so long as it takes to pop into a cab going and coming. Most wearers will admit that those shoes are not made for walking.
The word is that come fall Mrs. Obama’s kitten heels will be all the rage.
Gotta confess I am tempted to buy a pair of platform high heeled sandals for the summer. “Trendy” accessories can work if worn to complement the outfit and not dominate it.
Safe tottering.
Being 4’11″ I can identify with you. Kittens is as low as I go. Now that I’m retired and live in FL, I have a whole wardrobe of platform flip-flops. lol. But I luuuuuuuv my heels.
Not sure if we’re at the end, though. I remember reading once (in a book that I was given about shoes) that there was a point sometime in history, where ladies of means wore heels so high that they had servants that walked alongside them so they could hold on and keep from falling. lol. Although with the recession and all, I doubt I could afford human training wheels. lol
Your “set of human training wheels” is very handsome!
Stay happy.
Thank you!
every fashion has its time. The young girls in my office wear them and they look great. Of course they also have perfect bodies and we live in So Florida where every fashion is taken very seriously. I rather wear high heels than thongs which i find it is the most uncomfortable piece of clothing but the young women tell me that panty lines are an ugly site and i must get used to them, but i cant and opted for the boypanties or whatever they are called. I still wear my 3-3-1/2″ heels to the office and during one of our travels to Jamaica my younger travel companion told me “those are old ladies heels, you can wear 3″ if you want to but they must be a lot thinner”. So now i try to do the thinner but not taller. I did buy 2 “taller” shoes because i love the shoe but now i have to go to the shoeperson to have them cut a little. Cannot walk on those things. Pretty shoes though. I wear the open toe pump, it has the best of both worlds, not a shoe and not a sandal. Feminine with a pant suit otherwise i look like a guy. Not a good look for me.
Would you believe I used to wear platform shoes back in the ’70s? Back then they were considered COOOOLLL!!! I still wear
2 1/2 to 3-inch heels, but only on VERY special occasions. My feet can no longer take the strain. I see these young women in the 5-inch heels and envy them. They take me back to that time when I could wear them. Some of the styles are very nice and if I were in my 20s I would wear them. Some of the styles make the ladies look like Minnie Mouse. To each his own.
Dr. Scholl’s makes some wonderful ball of the foot gelpads. I always use them when I wear heels. BIG difference.
I’ve seen those in the drugstore and often wondered whether they would make a difference. These are the blue gel things, right? Are they the full foot or just the ball of the foot? I think I’l try them on your recommendation. Thanks, Olga.
Cute photo by the way!!!
They’re not blue, they’re clear. I’m talking about the just the ball of the foot ones. The full foot ones I use in sneakers. They make regular shoes too tight. I use (on the recommendation of my doctor) the heel cushions when wearing low to flat shoes to help prevent plantar fascitis (sp?). The reason our feet hurt in heels is that as we get older the fatty deposits in the balls of our feet thin out (go figure, the only place we lose fat is where we need it — lol).
Thanks on the photo. That’s my hubby and me. He’s such a cutie.
what? you don’t like my shoes? I love my shoes. I wear them at the office only, and change my shoes about 4 times a day but I do wear them.

Let’s hope and pray, not too long. Yikes! What are they thinking!?
