My hair started to thin after my youngest was born, that was over 20 years ago. Now my thinning hair is very obvious and I get all sorts of people taking a second look at me. I have learned to live with it, and do other things to make myself feel beautiful. However, I have never given up on my fight to overcome this problem. All articles that I have read have indicated that there is no remedy to grow my hair back, however, I feel very strongly that there is a remedy out there and I just haven’t found it yet. I know I am not alone and that there are thousands of women looking for the same thing. I feel that we need an avenue to come together and share information and this may be the perfect site. Thinning hair is a very sensitve issue for most women and is not something that we feel comfortable openly talking about. I can’t think of a better way to reach out to each other.

Thinning hair, uck! Mine started in my 30s due to physical female problems. When I was younger I had so much hair that when my mom gave me a perm, it looked like an afro. So I started 30 years ago trying to prevent, stop, or regrow my hair. Nothing has worked for me. I have spent quite a bit of money on hair treatments but none of them worked. I suppose we could do a hair transplant procedure but I don’t have that kind of money. So here I sit with thinning hair, unable to do most hair styles and feelings cheated. I’d like to hear about some possible solutions too.
I am lucky and do not have this problem, but I recently read about potential solutions from Dr. Andrew Weil. He says “ I would try nutritional approaches to stop further loss and to encourage hair re-growth. Make sure you’re getting enough omega-3 fatty acids by eating salmon, sardines, herring or mackerel two or three times a week or by sprinkling two tablespoons of freshly ground flax seeds per day on cereal or salads. Buy whole flax seeds, keep them in the refrigerator, and grind enough for a week at a time in a coffee grinder or blender. In addition, supplement your diet with GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) in the form of black currant oil or evening primrose oil, available in capsules or soft gels at health food stores. Take 500 mg of either twice a day for six to eight weeks to see if it plus the omega-3 are beginning to make a difference.” Here is a link to his full answer http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/QAA99989
Thank you susanadele. I’ll look into it and try anything to get my hair back.
There is this new product coming out next year called “Living Proof” which apparently uses a different type of molecular structure than the normal hair thickeners. I tried it and it is quite good but it will not be on sale until next year, however you could check their web site for more details.
I lost a lot of my hair after menopause and going off HRT, like you I felt so self conscious that I dreaded going out. Finally I went back to my dr. and asked to go back on HRT Some of my hair grew back, at least better than before, but I know that is not the answer for everyone.
Thank you pennylane: I’ll look that up and try it.
Thank you for your response. I was diagnosed with M.S. this passed Spring and put on Copaxon. My hair began falling out so bad I was afraid I would look like my bald doctor. I got off the Copaxon this Fall and life is returning back to a normal I understand and can work with and through but my hair is still not as lively as it use to be. I will look forward to this new product . Oh I do love my SILVER HAIR!
Thank you to everyone who replied to my post. It gives me a warm feeling inside to know that there are other women out there who are willing to share this with others. I am so glad to learn about the suggested websites and helpful suggestions. I will try each and every one of them. As I said I do not intend to give up because I beleive there is a solution out there.
Here are some of the things that I have tried so far and although they have not been 100% successful I believe that they have helped. I use the Nioxin products – shampoo, hair conditioner and there is a topical treatment. The Nioxin feels all nice and tingly on my scalp. On occassion I use the Mane and Tail products, which are meant to be used on a horse, but does a fairly good job thickening the hair shaft to make it appear thicker. I switch my products over the course of a two week period. I put a henna on my hair every so often which works well to coat the hair shaft and provide a thickener. I do eat a healthy diet but I will follow susanadele’s advice about eating more salmon, sardines, etc.; plus I definately will visit the site that she offerred. I also take Vitamin A, B, B12, and D, plus a multi-vitamin. Recent research that I read through Dr. Mercola’s wedsite indicats that we should be taking more Vitamin D then is recommended. In fact he had some interesting articles about the use of Vitamin D to fight the HINI virus. I take about 4000 mg of Vit D (depending on how much sunshine I get in a day), and keep a bottle at my desk at work in case I get to feeling “blah”. I also use fish oils. I have not noticed a difference in my hair, however, I have noticed a real difference in my fingernails and my skin has a nice glow to it. I recenlty started to use mimoxidill, which is normally used by men. During my research, I read an article that suggested that women who are no longer in their child bearing years use the men’s product because it is stronger. In Canada, we are limited to a low dosage, so in order to get a stronger dosage I am using the men’s. I would like to find the 5%. I haven’t seen any results yet, but I have only been using it for a month.
I to have difficulty trying out most hair styles and have used things like scarves, headbands, etc. Lately, I have just quit caring about it, and I just offer a smile to people who take a second look. But like dynamomma said it does feel like I’ve been cheated also. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who is encountering the same issues.
