Grey hair color happens to everyone, but science is still sorting out why. There are lots of urban legends about women who experienced such a stressful experience, it turned their hair shock white. There are lots of theories about how stress affects grey hair color, and some have famously blamed stress for giving them greys. President Barack Obama’s ever-greying hair has been studied and debated, the stresses of his job discussed at great length. So if you stop feeling stressed, can you stop seeing grey hair color in your head?

Causes of grey hair
What causes grey hair color to appear? Growing older, of course! Everyone knows that. And the people who get grey hair in their teens and twenties are just victims of premature grey hair. Something in the genes.
That’s one theory, and grey hair color may be just as simple as genetics. But science has been striving to dig even deeper than that, and understand exactly how hair turns grey. All of your hair grow out of follicles. You’ve got lots and lots of follicles on your scalp, but you’ve got them in many places on your skin as well (like your legs). Cells called keratinocytes are located at the bottom of follicles. It’s these tiny cells that make hair grow, and they help control color.
Melanocytes, another type of cell in the follicle, come in two different types: eumelanin and pheomelanin. Eumelanin is responsible for creating dark brown and black pigments. Pheomelanin creates red and yellow pigments. As these melanocytes age, they stop functioning. Basically, they stop making pigment. As a result, your hair turns grey.

Is stress to blame for it?
Stressing out about grey hair
Color can’t be affected by stress, can it? Some research indicates that it can. In one study, mice were injected with an adrenaline-like chemical to simulate stress. As a result, the mice experienced DNA damage at an above-average rate. The same type of effect may be occurring in humans who are suffering with chronic stress.
Other studies that show a link between stress and grey hair color have been conducted, but the scientific community still isn’t in agreement. The scientific community is still studying causes of grey hair color, and looking at how exactly hair pigment is lost. But to be on the safe side, maybe you want to start some regular meditation. Yoga, aromatherapy, even long baths can be effective at relieving stress. Practice something to lessen stress, even if you aren’t stressed about grey hair color. Stress relief can prevent a myriad of problems associated with menopause, including female dryness and hot flashes. Even if it can’t stop grey hair color, stress relief can definitely help you get through menopause.
