Will coloring grey hair help you get a job?

Vibrant Nation member vbetti hasn’t been able to find a job, and she suspects her grey hair color, along with her weight and hobble, might be keeping her unemployed. “Should I dye my hair to get a job?” she asked.

The answers ranged from the cynical – “Gray hair makes a man look distinguished. Gray hair makes a woman look like an old hag. You NEVER go gray!” quips Carol P. — to the encouraging – “I stuck to my guns on the gray hair and finally got a really good job!” writes BamaLover.

So will coloring grey hair help you get or keep your job?

Certainly, there are stories of women losing their hair over their grey hair color. Member kathydsf says it’s important to remember mature women are up against younger women when it comes to job hunting.

“I don’t think it is wrong to want to look and feel your best and nowadays, we are competing with younger women for the same jobs,” kathydsf says. “First impressions do count even though we don’t want them to. That doesn’t mean we give up what is inside of us.”

For BamaLover, vbetti’s story could have been her own. She also is overweight, looking for a job and sporting grey hair color, but she is committed to keeping her grey hair.

“It has taken me a whole year of temporary color, short haircuts and hard work to get my beautiful grey hair to look as good as it does now,” BamaLover writes. “I may have to cave at some point and give in to coloring again but for now, I will walk proudly into any interview that I happen to land and attempt the wow them with my brains, my abilities and my enthusiasm.”

And, ultimately, she reports, she did get a job where maturity was a key job requirement.

Mary B. Harvey points out it was easy enough to try coloring grey hair and then dye it back later, and Helen Dennis suggests it’s the whole package that mattered, not just her grey hair color.

“In addition to your hair, you mentioned your gait and weight as possible obstacles.  Remember it is your “whole” self that you are presenting,” Harvey says. “If you believe that your hair color is an obstacle, change it. However, do not neglect other aspects of your physical presentation that count in the initial interview.”

But not all members thought coloring grey hair was even a relevant issue when it came to vbetti’s problems finding a job.

ThurmanLady offers another point of view, suggesting that hair color isn’t the real problem at all.

“I’ve been out of work (as a legal assistant) for 2 1/2 years.  I don’t think it’s my gray hair or my weight. I truly believe it’s my years of experience and the fact that they might need to actually pay me for them,” she wrote.

Hair is a personal issue, she argues, not an employment issue.

“It’s not your hair – it’s the economy,” she writes to vbetti. “And, whether or not to dye is totally up to you and how you feel about it.  It just happens that I absolutely love my hair and I’d shovel manure at the local goat farm before I’d cave in (but it looks like they’re not hiring either.)”
