Hair dormancy

Naturally, your hair goes through dormant periods where it isn’t growing. It’s sort of the same thing that happens to deciduous trees during winter: your hair goes to sleep every few years. Research indicates that hair follicles go dormant every four years or so in the normal head.

Evidence shows that some hair follicles go into permanent sleep cycles, continually repeating a resting state. Your hair stops growing and falls out, resulting in female hair thinning. L’Oreal has worked up a topical solution that encourages hair growth by breaking dormant cycles.

L’Oreal’s research shows that hair may go to sleep because it’s not getting enough oxygen, an essential element needed by the human body. “Some of the follicles are just resting in the dormant state and are waiting for the right signal,” said Bruno Bernard, L’Oreal’s head of hair biology, in the Daily Express. A new shampoo from the cosmetics giant seeks to re-awaken those sleeping follicles by providing oxygenation.

Female hair thinning

Your hair follicles need certain vitamins and minerals to stay healthy and produce hair, but they also need good blood flow and even air. L’Oreal’s shampoo helps to address some of these needs, but not all. You should also eat a healthy, vitamin-rich diet to keep your locks healthy. Gentle daily scalp massage will promote healthy blood flow to keep your follicle stimulated and growing. But you should also avoid hairstyles for thin hair that create damage to your follicles, because this will only make female hair thinning worse. You’ve got to treat your hair well always, even and especially when you’re styling it.

Hair extensions are a great way to give your hair volume and body, but they may also be damaging. Avoid tight weaves that put pressure on the follicles; this can scar your scalp and cause permanent damage. Remove your extensions as instructed, and don’t try to stretch time between appointments. Leaving extensions in too long will also cause damage, and may result in female hair thinning or even noticeable bald patches.

You don’t have to hair extensions to make your hair look full. Try getting a layered cut that makes your hair look thicker, or style it with curls and waves that boost volume. Be good to your scalp; your hair will be healthier and look better.
