Should you switch from grey hair dye to color-blending foam?

In a world where everything’s supposed to be quick and easy, even grey hair dye is forced to evolve constantly. You can get dye that sprays on, grey hair powder that you pat on, even hair mascara that you sweep onto your grey roots. Now, you can get foam that works as grey hair dye…but does it work as well as the regular stuff?

Grey hair color-blending foam

All the big names in grey hair dye are offering color-blending foam, a new take on the traditional liquids used for coloring grey hair. The name is a bit misleading, however. Color-blending foam would seem to suggest that it somehow matches your existing color, but it actually works just like ordinary grey hair dye in that respect.

Like more traditional forms of hair dye, color-blending foam is available in a variety of hair shades, so you choose the color that most appeals to you. It does provide grey hair color coverage, so don’t shy away from foam because you think it might allow that unwanted color to shine through. If you’re going to avoid it, there are plenty of other reasons to leave the color-blending foam on the shelf.

The highlights

Why is color-blending foam the new thing in grey hair dye? For starters, foam has a reputation for being easier to work with than liquids. Instead of carefully squirting a squeeze bottle all around your head, you can simply cover your hands in foam and run them through your hair. It works a lot like shampoo, and every woman knows how to use shampoo. Color-blending foam comes with an easy-to-use dispenser pump and there’s a lot less chemistry involved – you won’t have to do a bunch of careful mixing that more traditional grey hair dye requires.

It’s lightweight and frothy and foamy, and it’s new. But before you decide to change your approach to grey hair coloring, get the whole story of color-blending foam.

The lowlights

According to many, many Amazon reviewers, color-blending foam is incredibly messy – much more so, in fact, than traditional grey hair dye with all its smelly chemicals. Drips are commonly reported. Others complain that the colors don’t turn out quite as expected, appearing in shades darker than what the box seems to promise.

Adjusting to any new grey hair dye is difficult, however, and you may find that once you develop a knack for it color-blending foam is a great solution for coloring grey hair. In order to use it, you must still exercise some care to avoid making a mess (like draping yourself with a towel) and you must still wear the plastic gloves. Everything you’ll need, minus the towel, is in the box.
