Female thinning hair

Men don’t own the market on hair loss and hair thinning – they just whine about it a lot more often. The truth is, experts estimate that one in every four women will have to deal with female hair thinning problems during their lifetime. When you begin to go through menopause and your hormones start acting up, it becomes more common to suffer female hair thinning.

Bodily changes can spark female hair thinning at any age. Weight loss, illness, even certain medications may cause excessive hair fall that leads to female hair thinning. You may even experience loss after major surgery. Any shock to your body, including menopause, may be the culprit. Not all female hair thinning is permanent, but it’s natural for everyone to experience some thinning and hair changes with age.

Medicate

There are medications available that can be used to manage female hair thinning. Consult with your physician if you believe you have problems with female hair thinning, and talk about the various ways you can treat the problem pharmaceutically:

  • Biotin and hair loss. Biotin, one of the B vitamins, is often recommended by experts to treat female hair thinning. You can find it in multivitamins, but it’s also possible to purchase stand-alone Biotin supplements. Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage of Biotin or any other vitamin — too much can be as bad as not enough.
  • Supplement your iron. Take iron supplements if you aren’t getting enough iron. Your hair needs iron to stay strong and healthy. Many women have difficulty ingesting and absorbing enough iron. To find out where you stand and do a good deed at the same time, go give blood. They’ll run an iron test and you’ll find out right away if your blood has enough.
  • Rogaine. The active ingredient in Rogaine is minoxidil, an FDA-approved hair loss drug. Rogaine encourages hair growth and prevents hair loss. Some experts say that Rogaine works even better in women than it does men. Consult with your physician to start medicating your female hair thinning with Rogaine.

Check your medications

Many different medications that you may already be taking can cause hair loss. Before you attempt to use new medicine to treat the problem, go through all the pills and supplements you take and double-check the known side effects. If you believe your medications are causing your female hair thinning, consult with your physician. They may have recommendations that do not include taking additional medication, not even supplements, to treat the problem.
