Female hair thinning is a common problem, and a painful problem, but is it possible that needles are the best of all thinning hair remedies? Acupuncture is a viable treatment for some sufferers of female hair thinning, strange as it may sound.

Female thinning hair
Women actually lose hair throughout their lives; everyone does. Through normal cycles of growth, some hairs on your head routinely die. They loosen from the follicles and shed; you lose dozens of these strands every month. Under usual circumstances, you won’t notice this regular loss because new hair grows in its place — but you probably find the evidence of this regular shedding in your drains and hair brushes. When hair starts to shed excessively, you’re experiencing female hair thinning that’s not part of the normal cycle.
Excessive hair loss happens for a number of reasons, but for many women it continues to be a natural process. As women age, hair follicles actually shrink. This changes the texture of hair, making it finer, and this results in overall thinness. Genetics can also cause hair loss in aging heads, but stress and scalp trauma are very common problems as well. Even illness can cause excessive female hair thinning.

Is acupuncture a viable solution for these problems?
Acupuncture and female thinning hair
Acupuncture is an ancient holistic remedy from the Far East. Touted as a stress-reliever, among other things, acupuncture has actually been labeled as a potential cure for many menopause symptoms. Can it help women who suffer with thinning hair, too?
- Blood flow. Acupuncture needles access pressure points in the body to stimulate blood flow. When the needles are used on the scalp, it’s believed this increased blood flow can help stimulate hair follicles and help spark new hair growth. The increased blood flow will also keep hair stronger to prevent loss.
- Healthy follicles. Practitioners of acupuncture for hair loss focus on the hair follicles themselves, which are at the root of thinning hair problems. Acupuncturists use their needles to stimulate follicles, and keep them from expanding and contracting, which leads to hair loss.
- Stress relief. The total-body approach of acupuncture therapy helps eliminate toxins in the body and re-balance humors, but many turn to it for its stress-relieving power. It’s a powerful argument in favor of acupuncture. Stress leads to hair loss, hot flashes, anxiety and a variety of unpleasant symptoms that are bad for you.
