Grey or Silver…….Who Makes the Choice Most Liked

As you may have surmised from this blog’s title or perhaps from the pictures across the top I am, one of the four women in Los Angeles with grey hair. People ask all the time, if it is my real color, duh! Who, would color their hair grey, how would you do it or more to the point why?

I initially had very dark hair, but I was tiring of the constant upkeep, so I decided to see exactly how much grey I had.

The first time, at age fifty, cut it short, didn’t have enough grey, dyed it back and waited another five years to try again. That would be my first tip to any of you wanting to go grey, “DO NOT TRY TO LET IT GROW OUT.”

Why, you may ask? If you have never colored your hair you might be okay with letting nature take its course, but if you been keeping it dark or even streaking it with lighter shades you won’t be able to handle the ever-widening stripe at your roots! That may make you give up the entire project.

Tip number 2: I simply left my regular hairdresser and started having Supercuts cut it short and trim it every ten days, in no time flat the color was all gone.

Tip number 3: you can’t really see how much grey you have until it grows out a bit, so bear with it.

Tip number 4: find a more youthful hair style, now you can get by with softer, slightly longer hair because you won’t appear to be trying so hard to look young! Now that you are saving a boat load of money not having color, you can have your hair cut by a really great hairdresser and you can afford the best products for your hair.

Tip number 5: a really good silver shampoo, I am still angry with Frederic Fekkai for discontinuing his blue shampoo, but you can find good ones at any beauty supply shop. Also, try the whole line of MOROCCANOIL products, everything they make is great for your hair.

But, most important is embracing the silver, once I turned the corner I am never going back to grey, I now have silver hair. That’s my story and I am sticking to it!!!

I lost all my hair during chemo and when it came back it was spotted like a dalmatian with 3 colors, gray, white and blackish/brown. I colored it again. Another woman I know hair came back a lovely shade of I mistakenly called gray. She corrected me to the proper hue, Steel Silver. It appears you share the good fortune of this great color!

    Great Suggestions!
I stopped coloring my hair 2 years ago.  After asking for ages if anyone could “match my highlights to my grey” (which is a lovely platinum shade) and being told “No, I’d have to totally blow your cuiticle.” Then getting a HORRID color job I cut my hair off, had my hairdresser tone it to my dark blond light brown natural shade and let the highlights grow off.  I had to reminde her several times I was OK with the grey “Oh yeah, you like that grey, er, ashy look”.  Now that I’m there my hair is healthier than it has been in years, I have “highlights” to die for and my sister is so jealous of my curls.   I have totally different hair.  I’m saving tons of money on color and time drying and flat ironing.  I just scrunch, shake my head and and go.

I went grey several years ago after tiring of having to get my hair colored every 3 weeks at $65 a pop. My stylist told me I was going to look older and not be happy with the look. Well, guess what…not only was I delighted with the look, my hair came in a gorgeous silver color and I get loads of compliments on it. I wont lie…growing it out was a challenge but I just kept my hair short and kept getting cuts often…I wouldnt go back to dying my hair at any price. I also love the new color palette that has come with the silver…blues, greys, blacks and fucsia. It feels so liberating not to have to deal with the roots, touch ups, long appts and cost. I say if you are thinking about doing it….go for it. I am 66 and a happy silver fox!
