Grey hair dye could save your job

It’s national news that longtime TV personality Ann Curry says she was fired from The Today Show for not using grey hair dye to cover up her silver strands, but she’s only one of many women who have made similar job claims. Many women have become articles in their local newspapers after being let go from jobs they were seemingly performing well, and all for a little too much natural grey hair color. But there are countless others who are never written about online or in print, women who are never talked about. In a world where image is everything, grey hair color really can be a job killer.

Fired for being grey?

Ann Curry, 55, is known for her bright clothing and matching personality, which she displayed well during her long stint on Today. According to various reports, Curry was asked to use grey hair dye to eliminate these visible signs of aging – but she refused.

She says this is why she was let go from the popular show. Others point to a different possibility: Curry’s co-anchor Matt Lauer. Some say the two lacked on-air chemistry together. No statement from NBC is currently available.

Curry, who still doesn’t plan on coloring her grey hair any time soon, says she may return to foreign reporting in the future. At only 55, she’s got a lot of life yet to live…but looking for a job in this economy sure is tough. Does having grey hair color make it even tougher?

The double standard

Can having grey hair color really get you fired? Isn’t there some sort of law against that?

Yes…and not really. Actually, employers can impose certain standards when it comes to their employees’ appearance. Hasn’t everyone worked somewhere with a dress code? Some places require you to wear a uniform, others might expect you to show up wearing fierce high heels and a smart suit jacket. In every job, it’s part of your job is to project a certain image. If an employer deems that grey hair color isn’t in keeping with that image…well, it’s possible to get fired.

All employers reserve the right to fire any employee at any time for just about any reason. As long as they are not firing you for ethnic, religious, political or sexist reasons, they can fire you for just about anything – even attitude and appearance. If you believe you are wrongfully fired for grey hair color, the burden of proving that will be upon you. It’s your job to prove their guilt; they don’t have to prove their innocence. So if NBC did fire Curry for her grey hair, they’re actually justified — it’s part of her job to look a certain way.

But trends show that grey hair color looks fabulous, too, so the choice is yours when it comes to your color. Wear your hair the way you want to wear it. Grey hair color can look modern and chic, too, not to mention sexy.
