The flip hairstyle is back, but if you wear it with your grey hair color will it make you look too dated? We all love the retro flip look from the 50s and 60s, but will your modern flip look way too retro if you wear it with natural grey hair? Vibrant women have to be careful when it comes to following hair trends.

The flip
The flip looks great on black-and-white TV shows, and it’s a must-have hairdo for any 60s-era film. As the name suggests, the flip hairdo features a single row of turned-up curls along the bottom — a little flip along the bottom edge. And these days, everyone’s wearing it like it’s 1959 again.
But are you really ready to go back to the Mary Tyler Moore look once your hair has already gone to its natural grey hair color…or will it just make you look like one of those women who has no idea who’s President and still thinks the word “groovy” is cool? Looking hip and fresh is easy for the twenty-something starlet who flips her hair for a bit of throwback fun, but it’s a little harder for vibrant women to successfully pull off a modern retro look.
Today’s flip
The modern flip isn’t the same as those old-fashioned flips from the 50s. The flipped ends may be barely there, in fact, and unstructured. Less definition creates a more carefree look that’s fun and fashionable. Don’t pair your flipped ends with the big, poofy helmet hair of the 60s (Patty Duke just isn’t cool anymore). Try something sleeker and flatter to beautifully show off that grey hair color. When paired with grey hair color, the flip is a great way to present a gleaming, shining head of beautiful silver.

It’s also really easy to create. With just an iron, hot rollers or clever hair brushing, it’s easy to turn up the ends of your hair for a fun flip that nods to modern and classic style at the same time. Try a deep side part with your flip, rather than something straight down the middle, to give it a modern slant. Go for a flip that’s feathery, not stiff and structured. The modern flip is light and airy, made to move, not like those immobile helmets of black-and-white TV.
