Flowers are a hobby of mine. If anyone has ideas how to keep plants from disease like roses, let me know. I also love to read magazines. Love country music or any music for that matter. I enjoy lots of fragrances. Lancome, Avon and others. Like to walk after work.

If anyone has ideas for getting things to grow in clay-like soil, let me know. I am in a mountain like area. I also like to watch the YOUNG and RESTLESS Soap. IF anyone has a good exercise for losing weight in the mid section- let me know. Like to shop- anyone have a good midpriced store to shop for petites?–THanks, Nancy

Good exercise – Pilate.  If you want to do it at home, I hold on to the railing of my stairs and do a lot of stretching.  Secondly, breathe in and hold your stomach muscle constantly throughout the day.  It builds abs.

Gardening – Mix manure with clay soil then plant flowers.

Roses?  Go for old roses – google ‘Old Garden Roses’ or ‘Antique Roses’ or ‘Heritage Roses’ and so on.  These are the ancestors of the roses we normally see in nurseries – the hybrid tea roses that are so doggoned finicky.

The wonderful news about old garden roses is that they are pretty much carefree.  I just stick ‘em in the ground and God bless ‘em, they manage to thrive on whatever’s going – rain, drought (Ok, I sometimes give ‘em a drink if it’s really dry), sun, shade, whatever.  My personal favourite is the sweetheart rose, Cecile Brunner.  Good luck!

I’ve heard that roses like lots of sun, so I planted several rose bushes next to the South side of my house.  I also planted a rose bush under a small tree in an island garden which was about 15 feet from my house.  It grew in dappled sun in the summer and was not sheltered from winds in the winter.  Surprisingly, that rose was much healthier than the roses which grew in full sun most of the day.  I think because it had better air circulation, it didn’t suffer from black spot like the other roses did.  I’ve heard the Knockout series of roses are low maintenance, and they come in many different colors.  Find a spot in your garden which gets sun and good air circulation.  There are a few roses that tolerate less sun if your yard is shaded.   You may need to amend your clay soil with peat…just follow the planting instructions that come with the rose.  Roses like moist soil, but try not to spray water on the foliage or you may get black spot.

    Good Luck!
