1. Fake an eye lift with eye shadow.
Vibrant Nation blogger Judi Freedman learned this tip from the MAC makeup lady who did her colors several years ago. “I use a light-colored shadow near my lash line and a deeper shade in an arc above the crease where my lid is dropping. Instant eye lift!”
2. Earth colors are more flattering.
“As I age, I find that less intense color helps me look younger,” says a Vibrant Nation member. “So, no bright eye shadow, no bright red lipstick. I stick with earthy colors over the eyes and light colors with no frost on the lips. Earthy colors help draw the attention to the eyes and not the color over the eyes.”
3. Use highlighting color to lift and brighten.
“Next to sun protection, a highlighting color can be the most valuable tool in your makeup wardrobe,” says Vibrant Nation member and makeup entrepreneur Susan Posnick. “As we age, gravity makes things fall. Careful use of highlighting color can counter the appearance of this.”
Vibrant Nation members agree. “I dab highlighter between my eyes and the bridge of my nose,” says one member, “It opens up my face and creates a more youthful look.”
“If I use eyeshadow at all, it is very scarce, but in a color that brings out my green eyes and then only in the outer corners of the top lid,” adds Vibrant Nation member Paula Allen. “Keeping the inner corners of your eyes bright gives an illusion of youthfulness.”
4. Don’t be afraid of a little eye shimmer.
“Many women over 50 are very afraid of eye shadows that have shimmer in them,” says Susan Posnick. “20 years ago, you needed to be afraid because the particles were so big that they made the eyelid look crepe-y. But today, everything is so refined you don’t have to be afraid of a little shimmer. This is a big change.”

I have found that with age the definition of your eye itself goes away, making eyeliner a must. Get it as close to the lash as you can & smudge the remainder! Use brown.
I wear glasses and need to bring extra definition to my eyes. I start with an eye shadow primer followed with a champagne eyeshadow that I sweep from my lash line to my eyebrows. It contains a very subtle shimmer. In the crease of my eye I use a soft beige. I use eyeliner all around my eyes to define them behind my glasses. I use a dark brown and create a very fine line in my top lashes. On the bottom I create the line under my lashes to give my eyes the appearance of being larger since my glasses make them look smaller than they are. The line I make there is thin toward my nose but becomes thicker at the end. After this I curl my lashes and apply two coats of mascara. Works for me.
