People have been purposefully growing shiitake mushrooms for more than a thousand years, but it didn’t start out as an anti-wrinkle face cream ingredient. Now, you may want to put them on your face instead of in your mouth to take advantage of their anti-aging properties.

Studying shiitake
Scientists have been studying the shiitake, but not for culinary purposes. The famous mushroom actually has many properties that are beneficial to skin. Natural complexes inside the shiitake stimulate the skin’s natural renewal process, and at least one cosmetics company is willing to see if they’ll work as anti-wrinkle face cream.
Aveeno, a company keen on using natural ingredients, is creating a shiitake complex to use in their anti-wrinkle face cream formulas. The antioxidants in the mushrooms help protect the skin against signs of aging and promote healthy skin cells to enhance a youthful glow. You’ll find shiitake mushrooms among Aveeno’s Positively Ageless line of products, which includes eye cream and other anti-wrinkle face creams.

Food and face cream
Shiitake isn’t the only edible ingredient to make an appearance in anti-wrinkle face cream formulas. Pumpkins, caviar and many other tasty foods are rich in vitamins and minerals that skin needs. But even if your anti-wrinkle face cream doesn’t have familiar food items listed among their ingredients, you may still be getting many of those vitamins and nutrients. Some cosmetics companies use foods to deliver what skin needs, others extract the minerals to place within their formulas.
But the food you eat can be beneficial to skin, too, even if it can’t wholly replace anti-wrinkle face cream usage. Skin needs to absorb vitamins and minerals from the inside, too, and no anti-wrinkle face cream will substitute for a poor diet. Take a total approach to skin care by nourishing it with the right food, plenty of water and a moisturizing face cream. When you focus on skin care inside and out, you’ll be warring against aging on multiple fronts.
Picking your anti-wrinkle face cream
Don’t buy anti-wrinkle face cream based on the price. Some of the most expensive creams are comparable to the more affordable wrinkle-fighting formulas. Check the ingredients list first and the price second when selecting your cream, and be sure to pick products that are oil-free to avoid clogging pores and creating blemishes. Skincare is supposed to be good for your face.
