Too much anti-wrinkle face cream is not a good thing

How many different anti-wrinkle face creams have you got in your bathroom closet? All those different formulas just may be a recipe for disaster. If you’re not careful, your face could end up paying a hefty price for your lotion love affair.

Mixing and matching

Do you use more than one anti-wrinkle face cream at a time, mixing and matching different formulas in search of that fabled fountain of youth? You could be doing more harm than good.

“When you pick and choose across different brands, you wind up using the same thing over again sometimes, or combining the same ingredients on top of each other, and that can be very irritating [to skin],” said Dr. Jessie Cheung of the Rush University Medical Center. “Labels will tell you what’s inside and what works, the active ingredients for these products.”

Certain face creams shouldn’t be mixed. Reinoids (such as Retin-A), products containing Vitamin C and alpha hydroxy acids (including glycolic acid) tend to interact with each other. The interaction can cause irritation, redness and actually make wrinkles worse!

“You’re stressing out your skin,” explained Cheung. She advises focusing on one product, one active ingredient.

Finding anti-wrinkle face creams that work

Instead of buying a ton of different products and mixing them together, find a product that gives you moisturizing, anti-wrinkle fighting and sunscreen all at once. Look at your labels to find the active ingredients that really improve your skin and fight wrinkles. Some of the expensive anti-wrinkle face creams are more about having a good-looking label than ingredients that actually repair and moisturize your skin.

Many anti-wrinkle face creams use the same active ingredients. Focus on finding the ingredients that work for you, instead of trying to mix and match a bunch of different anti-wrinkle face cream formulas. Copper occurs naturally in the skin and stimulates natural collagen production. Hydroxy acids exfoliate skin, but they increase your risk of sun damage. Natural tea extracts contain anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant properties to even out your skin tone.

Experts advise that above all, you should be protecting your skin with sunscreen. Don’t just wear it in the summer — wear it throughout the year. Chemicals can always react with each other, even when you’re using all-natural and organic ingredients. Find one anti-wrinkle face cream you love, and keep your beauty regimen simple.
