The best skin care regimen for women over 50

The number of anti aging skin products you use depends on your lifestyle, your habits, your expectations, your finances, and your skin’s needs. But according to fashion and beauty expert Lois Joy Johnson, every woman 50+ needs at least this daily regimen:

  • cleanser
  • sunscreen
  • moisturizer/night cream with ingredients that improve aging skin
  • body treatment with ingredients that improve aging skin
  • eye cream

Think of it in fashion terms. Some women prefer the ease and predictable style of a simple classic “uniform” : a dress and low heels or pants and a jacket, and they’re done. Other women take a more eclectic approach and like to put together pieces, layers, and accessories. Skin care can work that way too.

The right order for product application helps the layering process produce optimum benefits.
For day, the order goes like this:
  1. cleanser
  2. exfoliator (once or twice a week unless your cleanser has built-in exfoliating ingredients like glycolic acid)
  3. toner serums or gels (although alcohol-based toners are too drying for most mature skin)
  4. eye cream
  5. redness reliever or moisturizer
  6. sunscreen (not necessary if your moisturizer has an SPF of 30 or more and you’re working indoors)
  7. makeup primer (if you use one)
  8. foundation

For night, the order is:

  1. cleanser
  2. Retin-A or a prescription skin-care serum (if you use one)
  3. eye cream
  4. night cream/moisturizer without SPF (if this is a dual day/night moisturizer)
