One of the beauty and skin care product questions women ask me most often is, “Is my hodge-podge collection of products from several brands okay, or should I really be using one regimen from the same brand?”
Ask any researcher, public relations pro, or counter beauty adviser from one particular company, and they will say yes, stick to one brand…theirs.

They will say the products have been formulated to work together and it’s easy to upgrade or change a part of your regimen without playing scientist yourself. To some extent, this is true. If you want a fast and easy strategy, can’t be bothered hunting, or have gotten dependable and consistent results from a particular brand, stick with it. It’s low risk because you can update products easily as they change and slide them into your regimen.
But if you enjoy the process of finding and trying new products and have an understanding of your skin’s needs and goals, taking a more individualized approach is fine. By 50 or 60, you’re ultimately the best judge of whether a product is working for you. You know if you prefer a simple, pared-down regimen or a more complex combination of targeted skin products. You know if you’d rather slip in to any drugstore and get what you need or if you like chatting with a beauty adviser at the counter one-on-one. You know if you need to baby your sensitive skin or give it a high-performance cocktail of rejuvenating ingredients. You might prefer one brand’s night cream and another brand’s day treatment. Perhaps you’ve gotten amazing results with a specific brightening cream, but the same brand’s eye cream is too heavy for you or doesn’t do enough!
Ultimately, trust your gut and experience, but be wary of hopping from one product to another too quickly. Significant change in pigmentation and wrinkles takes six to eight weeks, so give products a chance, although you can see a difference in freshness and radiance more quickly. If you take the combine-it-yourself approach, integrate one new product at a time so that it’s easy to pinpoint problem products if your skin has a negative reaction.
