I’m sure you have heard all the good things coconut oil is good for. My daughter and her husband and been using it for quite some time. I just started using it a few months ago. I have been doing research on all the benefits of coconut oil and this is a little of what I found.

Because coconut oil has a large amount of saturated fat, you would think it would be bad for you, but on the contrary it is not. That is because it contains about 50% lauric acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

It is also suppose to help in weight loss. It is easy to digest and contributes to  healthy function of the thyroid.  It is also suppose help to increase your metabolism. Now I haven’t been on it long enough to see any benefit. Currently, we are moving, and we have been in a motel, eating out for every meal for several weeks. Hopefully, as soon as I get settled in our new home, I can reap the benefits. After all this out to eat stuff, I’m going to need to loose a bunch of weight!

Coconut oil is suppose to be good for the skin too. Lately, I’ve been using it on my skin at night; my face included. Because it tends to penetrate your skin after while, it is not that greasy. It is at first, but after awhile, not so much. It does mention that coconut oil is suppose to be good for skin conditions. Now I’ve had this rash on my lower leg for close to a year now. I’ve been to several doctors for this, including a dermatologist several times. I have had so many prescription creams that I can’t begin to tell you the amount I’ve spent, and still I have this nasty, itchy rash. And, no it has nothing to do with my self tanner. The fact is, I started using it after I got this rash so it doesn’t look so bad. Anyway, the coconut oil has not helped to get rid of the rash. It has not spread, but it also has not gone away. So, the jury it still out on coconut oil and skin conditions.

There are so many benefits of coconut oil. I found a really good article http://www.organicfacts.net/organic-oils/organic-coconut-oil/health-benefits-of-coconut-oil.html is the web site. It is a good read with A LOT of information. I highly recommend the read.

One thing it did mention that I do not agree with is the benefits of coconut oil on your hair. Now I do believe that it makes a good conditioner BEFORE you wash your hair. I have used it and kept it in over night. Then in the morning I wash it out. Coconut oil seems to soak into your hair overnight. So it is not so greasy in the morning.  Today, though, I tried to use it AFTER I washed my hair like it said in the article. I used  very little, because I do have very fine, yet think natural blonde hair. I towel dried my hair, and left the towel on my head while I put my self tanner on, and then put my make up on. After that, I started to blow my hair dry. Boy! Did I EVER have a mess. I looked like a grease pit. I was not happy, as I had to wash my hair again, careful not to ruin my self tanner and makeup. I think I was successful as to not mess up my self tanner, but I had to redo my makeup. Good thing I don’t have anything else to do today.

Anyway, while coconut oil is good for many things, it is NOT good for after you wash your hair conditioner.

For rashes, I have found that applying a combination of glycerin and witch hazel (equal parts) 2-3 times daily works beautifully.  I had a dry, itchy rash on my leg that would not go away no matter what type of prescription cream (antibiotic, anti-fungal, steroid).  The glycerin and witch hazel completely healed it.  I had what appeared to be psoriasis on both of my elbows, and the steroid creams did not help. I used the glycerin and witch hazel and after a couple of weeks, gone!

        Hi Jennie,
I just get the regular witch hazel and glycerin from my local pharmacy.  I put a capful of each in a glass, and mix it well.  Then you dip a cotton ball in the mixture and apply it.  It’s best to do this at least 2x/day.  I would do it first thing in the morning after my shower, and then again in the evening.  For me, it worked like a charm.  Good luck!

I LOVE coconut oil–I use it to both cleanse and moisturize, and have for quite a while now.  For night, I add a bit of teprenone and argan oil and have had very good results.  I do agree with the conditioning of the hair aspect–it works best for me if I use it as a deep conditioning agent before washing.

Hi Jacycee; what is teprenone?  I love coconut oil, and I love the smell, and I use argan oil on my hair, too.  This sounds so interesting.
      Thanks!

I love coconut oil. I haven’t eaten but I’ve been inspired by the dietary comments.
I use coconut oil as a moisturizer for my skin and hair with great results. My hair is very dry, coarse, wavy and thick. I use a small amount, about a dime’s worth. I use right after the shower before my hair has been dried. I comb my hair with a comb that has very large, spread apart teeth. Add the coconut oil, liquifying it first, between my hands. I gently massaged through then comb again. Then I partially dry my hair with an old t-shirt just gently patting the shirt on my hair then I let it air dry. In my case, I end up with non-frizzy waves and softer than my coarse hair has ever felt.
I recommend not giving up on coconut oil for the hair, you may have to experiment on the amount to use for your hair – start out with a small amount rather than a medium or large amount. Add to the top layer, pat a little to the inner layers – the combing will redistribute the oil to the various layers and so will the patting with the t-shirt (for wavy or curly hair) or towel for people with straight hair.

Thank you so much for this, as my hair has become very dry and frizzy since going gray.  I have naturally curly hair, and have been spending quite a bit of money on conditioners and such with little improvement.  I will definitely try this.  Thank you!!!

I need to experiment with this, again; I tried it once, and it worked wonders; however, the second time, it made my hair feel greasy, and the third time, it really didn’t do much, but I adore coconut, and I may have to revisit this once again.  Thank you so much.

Found this while looking into information about coconut water, which I love and use instead of Gatorade (has less sodium!)
“During World War II it was discovered that coconut water (not to be confused with coconut milk) is the perfect substitute for human blood plasma. It is isotonic to our own blood, has the right electrolytes, and won’t be rejected by the body. If taken straight from the coconut it’s also sterile. War doctors soon began tapping the fluid from coconuts and using it for plasma transfusions. Surprisingly, this treatment was (and remains) highly successful.”
    Thought this was interesting….
Now, virgin coconut oil seems to be useful if used topically: as a moisturizer, to improve your hair texture. I don’t think I would actually use it all the time, just as a treat in cooking ….like butter or cream!

Hi Jaycee, I favour the coconut oil over almost anything. Having a fair skin, I burn very easily no matter how strong the sunscreen cream is. After sun tanning and showering off the sun screen I apply coconut oil on my skin. It seems to lubricate and soothe the skin.

Can I ask of you what the ratio of the coconut oil is to teprenon and argan oils is? I have not tried this type of cleanser and moisturizing lotion.

I started using 365 coconut oil from Whole Foods and I love it. Last night I put the coconut oil in a pan and added fresh spinach. The result was a lovely delicate coconut taste to the spinach and everyone loved it. I topped it with lightly browned pine nuts.

Jaycee, I might have to try what you said about using it as a before you wash your hair conditioner. My hair is so very, very fine, like a babies hair, and stick straight, so using it as a conditioner after washing did not do well at all…just too greasy. But before washing I can see how that would work well. Thank you!

Does it have to be refrigerated?

      Hi Anita:
I have mine refriegerated; it becomes solid when cold, liquid at room temperature if it’s above 73 degrees.  It emulsifies almost immediately, so if it’s refrigerated, you only need to take it out with a spoon, and ouila, it softens easily and liquifies, as well.
