Hi Ladies,
I’ve worn glasses for 55 years, but after recent eye surgery I may end up only needing reading glasses. I’m shocked/elated/clueless about make up without glasses.
To start with, can I get some recommendations for covering they puffy bags under my eyes? The bags are hereditary, so nothing takes them away.
Thanks

Hi Vonnie,
There are a few great products on the market. Try looking for a Mary Kay beauty consultant in your area. There is an eye revitalizer that works very well!
Well, I have the puffyiness under my eyes too and used to use one concealer and Bare minerals foundation that I noticed did not work well for coverage after seeing myself in pics. I switched to Christian dior concealer and foundation and it is well worth the price. I can compare pictures of myself then and now and the puffiness is gone and my skin tone is more even. The CD concealer goes on so smoothly and covers imperfections nicely. You also should try a foundation primer to apply first for best coverage. Smashbox foundation primer is nice.
I just bought Christian Dior Skin Flash primer, but haven’t used it yet. It’s the first CD product and the first primer I’ve ever used. Now, I better order the concealor.
Thanks for the recommendations.
Phyllis – I have a MK consultant in the area, but don’t like to contact her because she nags me about giving a party.
Hi Vonnie, Thanks for the comment. If you like her, and you’ve been happy with her service, then I’d recommend just telling her that you’d like to be a customer that does not have parties. You may also let her know how often you would like to be contacted, i.e., every 6 mos., catalog only, email newsletters, etc.
Also, keep in mind that the best compliment that you can give any small business owner is to refer a friend to her, because that is her best advertisement.
Let me know if you’d like further advice on this.
This is one of the most challenging beauty problems for women of a certain age.
First of all get yourself a soft pillow so that you can sleep on your back. Then put a set of spoons in the freezer so that you can use them first thing in the morning. Pop two spoons on your eyes in the morning. These will jumpstart your circulation as well as reduce the swelling from overnight.
Find a silicone-based foundation in a shade slightly darker than your natural color. This is a one product area – except for the HD setting powder coming up so the silicone formula acts as a primer as well. You’ll be using this under your eye. Apply with a small flat synthetic brush. Use a tiny amount. The sound of your brush should make is blend, blend, blend, blend, blend.
Blend out all the edges. Now move to the second eye, complete that before doing any touchups.
Brush a light coat of HD mineral translucent powder over the area with a small eyeshadow pony brush. (www.janetlamar.com) You want this area to appear as smooth as possible.
Now finish your eye make-up by choosing an eyeshadow shade that is either lighter or darker than the tone that you’ve put beneath your eye. You want to take attention away from that area.
Add a thin line of a silicon-based waterproof liner on the TOP lid only, one coat of mascara and don’t forget your brows! Nothing goes under the bottom lashes.
After some practice, you’ll be able to do this in less than five minutes.
I find the best brushes are by Sonia Kashuk at Target. They are manufactured by the same USA company that the high-end department store brands use. Don’t pay more for great quality! I’m happy to share more recommendations and tips on my blog: facesoverfifty.com
Thanks for the tips, FOF! I’ve done the teabag over the eyes, but never spoons. Good thinking.
Since I hit the 50s, I only use eyeliner above the eye. Sometimes I opt for grayish shadow beneath the if I’m going formal.
Great tips, everyone! Still wearing glasses at this time, but my life is revolved around June 6, next eye dr appt.
Anon, did the make up actually reduce the under eye puffiness or just hide it?
The makeup just covers it up nicely but does not decrease the puffiness.
Also, another factor that contributes to eye puffiness is salt intake. Reduce your sodium intake by not adding salt at the table and avoiding salty foods and you will see a decrease in your eye puffiness.
Thanks, Anon, but I never use extra salt and check the sodium on everything. I inherited puffing bags from my dad. We always look tired even first thing in the morning.
I’ve tried the spoon idea and a plethora of products. I’ve decided nothing really gets rid of puffiness except surgery, which I won’t do.
I hear you!
Of course, we can’t see you so we don’t know the extent of the problem and can only make suggestions.
You probably know by now that this is super sensitive skin that reacts to sun damage, genetics and gravity and no cosmetic product can change that.
You can slightly help it from not getting worse by wearing good eye protection, minimizing allergies, and keeping the area hydrated with a creme to minimize the LOOK of the fine lines but you are absolutely right. That’s as far as it goes.
And that would be true any facial area.
So now simply own your face. It’s yours! It’s unique! “Puffy eyes” are just that. They don’t detract from your smile or sense of humor ….they are just a facial feature.
Personally, I am not interested in facial surgery either. It’s just not me. I don’t judge others. But I actually am okay with the way I look. And my eyes have looked puffy from birth!!
Hi FOF. You are the second person that has recommended using a shade darker under the eyes. I can’t imagine how it helps, but I will certainly give it a try. My eyes were alway my best feature when I was younger. Now they are my thorn in my side due to puffiness and bags.
It’s really just smoke and mirrors! Or pulling the emphasis away from one area and focusing it somewhere else. (I can remember putting Bonne Bell white highlighter under my eyes!)
I know what you mean about feeling that your eyes are a thorn in your side. My feeling is that I do what I can do and then I just forget about it. I always try to err on the proverbial “less is more” side. For some women that may feel really uncomfortable at first. But I look at a lot of faces and I’m here to tell you that a little goes a long way!
You are so right facesoverfifty about pulling the emphasis away from one area of your face or body that you don’t like by focusing attention elsewhere. A good example of this is diverting attention away from your neck if you don’t like the way it looks by lowering the neckline of your top. A lower neckline moves others’ eyes lower down, away from your neck. A higher neckline that starts where you neck ends puts more attention on your neck.
