Micropigmentation: ParaMedical Applications

Blink again. That’s right, permanent makeup, or tattoo art,  for paramedical applications.  Surgeons from esteemed hospitals including Cornell University’s NY Presbyterian and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center regularly refer patients to skilled tattoo artists to put the finishing touches on their work. And what’s more, some of these paramedical treatments are covered by insurance.

Take a look at the left image below of a woman after her mastectomy. Years ago, after a mastectomy, women would have to confront this mirror reflection  daily. But fortunately, today a breast can be ebuilt through reconstructive surgery, her areola and nipple areas repigmented through the artistry of a skilled tattoo artist.

Some physical conditions present more subtle breast irregularities that nonetheless can cause self-consciousness. Again, permanent makeup to the rescue, applied to not just simulate an areola, but to enhance the color or shape of ones with asymmetries or discolorations.

Micropigmentation is also used to conceal disfigurements and scars.

For those who have lost eyebrows and eyelashes due to alopecia or chemotherapy, permanent makeup can restore the appearance of lashes and brows. Those with compromised vision or an unsteady hand, who have difficulty applying even, natural makeup strokes, find tattoo art an alternative to using cosmetics.

You don’t need to feel self conscious about hair loss, scars and other disfigurements. Micropigmentation can easily improve the way you look and feel about yourself. Although often referred to as permanent, know that treated areas might require future touch-ups, especially in areas exposed to the sun.

A Few Words of Caution:
As with any aesthetic enhancement procedure, results will vary according to the skill and experience of the technician. The largest concern surrounding micropigmentation is finding a qualified technician. Micropigmentation is currently being performed by dermatologists, cosmetologists, estheticians, nurses, and tattoo artists; but there are no national training requirements in place. Some states have no regulations whatsoever, which means that your procedure could be done by someone with no training or experience.

How do you determine if the technician is qualified? Here are a few tips from Dr. Kristanne Matzek, Executive Director of the American Academy of Micropigmentation (AAM) to help you:

  • Confirm that the practitioner is board certified through the AAM, a national organization that credentials permanent make-up professionals.
  • Ask to see before after pictures of their own patients. Don’t be satisfied with just some images taken from the Internet!
  • Choose a technician whose work matches your style. Be sure that photographs reflect work that has gone through the treatment stages and is completed.
  • Take a look around the site. Does it look scrupulously clean? Trust your first impressions. Confirm that the equipment used is totally disposable or that there is an autoclave for sterilization.
  • Ask for references from some of their former patients, so that you can speak to them or better yet, see their results.

A final word of advice: Avoid trendy looks. Before making a decision, ask yourself if you want to see that same effect when you look in the mirror day in and day out.
