Do you need a breast reduction and lift, or will breast reduction surgery be enough?

If your breasts have continued to grow and sag as you get older, you may be considering a breast reduction and lift. Breast reduction and lift are a combination of two surgeries: breast reduction surgery to reduce the size of large, pendulous breasts, and breast lift surgery to reposition where the breasts sit on the chest.

According to Wendy Lewis, author of Vibrant Nation’s Cosmetic Procedures and Plastic Surgery Guide, a mastopexy or breast lift is “a surgical procedure to raise and reshape breasts that have sagged as a result of pregnancy, nursing and the natural force of gravity. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. A breast lift can also be combined with an implant in some cases where volume needs to be enhanced or replaced.”

Breast lift surgery may involve repositioning the areola and nipple, as well as lifting the breast tissue and removing skin. It may be performed alone, or in combination with placement of breast implants. The effects of the surgery are temporary, as gravity and continued aging will cause ptosis (the drooping or sagging of the breast) to recur over time.

When women complain of back, shoulder and neck pain due to the large breasts, many doctors may recommend reduction mammoplasty, or breast reduction surgery. The procedure provides smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts. The surgeon may also reduce the size of and change the shape of the areola or nipples.

While there are several techniques to achieve the results in use today, all reduction methods produce some degree of breast lift. Patients may take a few weeks for initial recovery. However, it may take from six months to a year for the body to completely adjust to the new breast size.

Why a breast reduction and lift?

In general, older women with large, heavy breasts find that a breast lift alone is not the right procedure for them. A breast lift only changes your skin (excess skin is removed to lift your breasts), which will not produce long-lasting effects for women with breasts larger than a D-cup. Some large-breasted women who choose breast lifts find their breasts are right back where they started after only a few months.

Many Vibrant Nation members who’ve had breast reduction surgery or breast reduction and lift say they are very happy with their decision.

“My response to all of you who are questioning having breast reduction surgery is: if you’re having problems of any sort, go for it, and do it now. If you’ve had problems with your back, neck, numbness, etc., check to see if your insurance companies will pay for it. They should. I would bet a kazillion dollars that if a man had such large testicles that he had to buy special underwear to manage those boys and couldn’t find slacks that fit properly because of them, insurance companies would be beating down his door to help him out.”

Another Vibrant Nation member shared the same sentiment and her satisfaction with the results:

“The backaches were a little too natural for me. Now I am soooooo happy to have gone from a 34L to a 32D that I am running again (around younger women) shopping at Anthropologie and having no pain… I’m feeling fit, young and pretty, and very satisfied that I made this decision and grateful to my surgeon, who took such pains to keep me feeling great as I age.”

Among other benefits, breast reduction surgery is actually more appropriate for post-menopausal women; they certainly don’t have to worry that childbirth or nursing will change their breast size after surgery. And as another Vibrant Nation member noted, there are other benefits as well: “Removed breast tissue is biopsied; better than a mammogram! And one unforeseen luxury I am thrilled about, because I love to sing: I sing better. Yes, it’s true, folks, breast reduction surgery improves the voice.”
