Having  developed fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis eight years ago, I had to get rid of all my footwear as they were just not comfortable to me anymore. I happened to stumble on a pair of Skechers “sneakers” while shopping. Although open-backed and a half-size to small, I still knew that I had to check out this brand because this pair was so darn comfy!
Now, this is the only brand that I wear now. And while they have several lines of shoes, the only line I like or will wear is the Biker line by Skechers. They have only a 1/4 to 1/2 inch heel depending on how you look at it, but they are considered “flats”. They all have the same sole, which is like a pair of sneakers, giving you traction  and a wide sole for stability, but don’t look it-and this is not just “sneakers” we’re talking about.
What’s so great about them is that they come in all kinds of different styles, some very dressy, though their mainstay is in the running/walking shoe territory.  But then, I have my “pointe blanks”-an adult woman’s form of sneakers, several different pairs of dainty “ballet” flats, suede moccassins, brown suedes with cut-outs, and even three different colors (brown, black and yes, gold) of their “gladiator” sandals with so much in between!
Also, with whatever shoe I buy (all Skechers of course), I always have to use a shoe insert. If the manufacturer’s insert readily comes out, I have many more options as to what type of insert I will use because they can usually handle a thicker option, one which you might ”walk out” of if the manufacturer’s sole didn’t come out. If the manufacturer’s sole insert doesn’t come out, you still have many options out there and can choose those that suit your particular problem whether it be arch problems, bunions, plantar fasciitis, etc… I need soft, cushiony inserts that just make my feet feel good enough to walk small distances. I also seem to prefer foam and “memory” foam insoles to gels, but that’s just my preference and prefer a 3/4 sole, meaning that the insert ends at the ball of the foot, giving your toes more wiggle room.  And each pair seems to feel better with different inserts, so needless to say, I have quite an arsenal of different types of insoles.
I highly recommend shoe inserts with arch support because most shoes (even Skechers) don’t have enough. Lets face it, most of us buy shoes for the way they look (or the way they make our legs look so good) but as an ex-bartender, waitress, hairdresser, etc., I have spent many hours working on my feet. Comfort is what you need over looks.
Some other brands I did well with (before my illnesses) were Just for Comfort, Comfortview, Mootsie’s Tootsies, Red Cross brand , Aerosoles, and Dr. Scholl’s.
But I can tell you that when I find a style I really like, I Google-search it and then go for the best price as they tend to discontinue alot of their styles very quickly. Their prices really aren’t that bad either- most run between $35-$60 per pair. So when I see a pair of Skechers I like, I jump on it. Although I’m usually on top of the new styles, I actually found a pair of black suede moccasins with white topstiching for only $24.00 on-line simply because they were discontinuing them! And I found my “gladiator” sandals for HALF price on a clothing website! So, sometimes its good to be late to the party! Hope this helps your feet stay happy.

I purchased a pair of Naot shoes several years ago – if you are willing to pay the extra $$ for them, I can’t recommend them enough!!  They are comfortable, they have worn wonderfully (the soles still look almost new).  I recently spent a couple of days in Chicago with my daughter and wore my Naots – we put 10 miles on them in one day and 5 the next – my feet and back held up wonderfully!  The nice thing about the Naot shoes – you can purchase a new INNER shoe for it without having to replace the whole pair!!

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post links, but here’s what they look like – I think they would be perfect for being on your feet all day!!

I can, but they are expensive.  These are the most comfortable and attractive flat shoes I have ever seen.  I have several pairs and when I go to England next year I will be buying more.  That’s right, they’re made in England but you can buy them from their USA website http://www.hottershoes.com/.  Extremely helpful customer service reps with charming accents will give you the complete measurements so you can choose the absolutely correct size.
