bare legs Hot Conversation

I’m going to a family wedding at the end of February in S. Cal. I live in eastern PA. I have a lovely, deep plum dress made of a very sheer fabric. My instinct is to wear sheer black hose with close-toe shoes, but my CA relatives tell me hose are passe.  My legs are not ready to bare – any suggestions?

I don’t see why you shouldn’t wear black tights.  All of the younger women are wearing them with nothing over them…yes, just black tights, boots and a short coat.  So why in the world would black tights be passe?

What color are your shoes? Leather or poie de soie? What time of day is the wedding? What color are you?

All those elements need to be taken into consideration. Personally, I’m in favor of an ultra-sheer pantyhose to match your skin-tone or, if it’s an evening wedding, even an ultra sheer off-black pantyhose. Hanes and Berkshire carry great lines of ultra sheer colors that disappear on the leg. Who’s to know you’re wearing pantyhose? If they comment, tell them they’re standing much too closely to you.

Bare legs to a wedding? IMHO an unfinished, unVibrant look.

i agree.  Plus, I do not know about you ladies but the back of my legs are beg to show very little veins and i am a dark skin woman (less visible than a fair skin woman).   I am not comfortable with a no hose to a formal affair except if the dress is midcalf length with pretty open shoes.  As a matter of fact i am going to start that look for the Spring.  I am tired of wearing pant suits all the time, where it will be a good place to find dresses and skirts this length?

Dress for yourself, not so much for others. I must wear support pantyhose and if you look nice, who cares if you do not have a California tan? We get too caught up in what other people think is ok. We need to be pleased with ourselves and say the heck with somebody else’s dictates. I was in a bad marriage for a long time because I was trying to please someone who had an addiction. Someplace along the line you learn to take care of yourself and accept yourself and know that you are ok without taking a negative response too seriously.

We have earned the right to dress however we please and feel comfortable.  Of course there are some that will go overboard…those wearing next to nothing, showing too much flesh, etc.  But for the majority of us, we have enough sense to wear what’s comfortable and presentable.  I for one have given up hose a long time ago.  I went to my 35th class reunion 3 years ago in a short (not mini…just above knees) denim skirt, and I had tanner on my legs.  They do look better tanned.  But I looked damned good girlfriends!  I was blessed with no veins and decent legs, however I take care of myself, and work out to try and maintain what God gave me.

I say do what ever floats your boat ladies!!!

You go girl! I bet you look great. True, some ladies reveal too much. Sounds like you look good but dress appropriately for your age which is important. Keep up the good work…

Ive enjoyed this post..as I mentioned earlier in it..Ive found the whole “hose or bare leg” issue conflicting. I happen to notice on the BBC channel last night..the BAFTAS were on..which is the Brits version of the Academy Awards..and every single woman..whose legs were exposed…young and old..were wearing HOSE!!!!  Most of them were black sheers..not tights mind you..but black sheer hose.  Is this bare leg thing just a USA trend??

I almost never see hose with the Brides I work with. Hose are passe with younger women.  Dark, patterned like fish net, yes, I said fishnet is really popular now.  You may see what’s available in a pattern.  They either tan, use tan lotion or nothing at all.  My feeling about what you are thinking is for you to wear just what you’re planning.  It’s still winter and wearing dark hose on closed toes shoes is formal.  So. Cal is probably going to be warm so not wearing them and putting the lotion on is a good idea, then you may have to wear different shoes.  It’s like dominoes, change one thing, and it all has to change.  Be comfortable.

It will probably be in the 60s the day of the wedding. Personally, I think that fishnets would look ridiculous on a woman over 50! With all of the beautiful sheer hosiery out there these days, I cannot understand the conflict. Remember, ladies, this trend was started by the younger generation who have ,on the most part, beautiful, unscarred, unlined legs. If you have the legs of a young woman, go for it. Otherwise, wear the hose. Food for thought-while shopping at the local mall, I noticed many young woman wearing rather sheer sundresses. Guess what? They have also decided that slips are passe!! Well, they should dig one out of their mom’s lingerie drawer cause it is not pretty to see everything under those dresses! Should we also follow that trend?

My son had a girlfiend who actully showed up for dinner wearing something like that.  She was wearing a thong to boot.  My other son’s GF and I were speechless.  He told us later how embarrassed he was.

Have you actually seen the hose I’m talking about?  There are designs from neutral to the far-out dancer types.  Really, check them out.  I hope no one thinks I’m ridiculous and in fact, I get many compliments.  The texture and beige color is just right and not overbearing to the rest of the outfit.

She should wear what she wants.  Hose or no.  Be comfortable.

What you describe your son’s GF wearing is gross!  And at a dinner!  But I must admit I hate slips!  I’ve stopped wearing them but always wear lined dresses and skirts.  I usually found myself fighting with my slip rather than enjoying the occasion!  I also don’t wear nylons.  I use tanning lotion but I’m self-employed and work at home.  I might change my attitude if I worked in an office, etc.  By the way, I live in So. Cal.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all your comments.  Thanks to all of you!

Her dress was very sheer and standing next to a light wasn’t helpful.  He isn’t with her now.  Thank God.

I wear tanning lotion and wear my skirts, dresses and shorts below my knee.  Just below.  I think knees are ugly and very telling of age.  Plus, the tanning lotion seems to concentrate on elbows and knees.

OOPs! I almost forgot we were talking about pantyhose, tights, plum, black, nude, spray tan …

I’m confident you’ll figure this one out with all of these suggestions.

    Moving on.

Yes Rose 6 with 159 posts on this “bare Leg” topic I was  hoping by now we would have heard how it all went at the wedding and how the legs survived and what they were clothed in or not. Fun topic.
