The average woman has 30 pairs of shoes, according to the book Fashion 101, A Crash Coarse in Clothing by Erika Stalder. Boy am I behind the times. I have a whopping total of 7 pairs of shoes/boots that I regularly wear – mostly walking and gardening shoes.
I *want* to have dressier shoes to wear with my sporty tank dresses and summer skirts, but I hate high heels. Or anything I can’t walk 3 miles in comfortably. If I’m going to pay good money for shoes, I want to be able to be comfortable.
I recently purchased some cute little Merrell ballet slipper type flats that have a diagonal strap across the instep.
I wouldn’t want to walk 3 miles in them, but they are really cute to wear with sporty tank dresses and summer skirts walking around the neighborhood or going out for a bite to eat. I’d say they are cute enough for women even under 50. My 19-year-old daughter wants to wear them, but I’ve already given her all my high-heeled shoes, so I feel justified in having this ONE pair of dressier shoes just for me.
Have you used Merrell Barefoot Ballerina Shoes? Rate them below!

I have a pair of Skechers that I LOVE…look great with summer skirts, shorts, slacks, plus you COULD walk 3 miles in.
The best part (for me) is that the strap (with velcro) is adjustable for when the feet start getting puffy. Also they have sections with holes in them so your feet get some air. This is the best photo I can find (I don’t get a kickback either!): http://www.onlineshoes.com/womens-skechers-bikers-proposal-white-p_id240307?source=igodigital&
MinniePauz – those are CUTE shoes! Thanks for the link. I see some other possibilities in the side box as well. Red, blue, or teal are all colors I’d love to see in a shoe.
Yes, Skechers definitely. I wear them everywhere. They are attractive, and you can walk miles in them.
Ballet flats and flip flops are the absolute worst thing that you can wear for your feet and your whole body. There is no arch support or any type of support for your feet or your body alignment. There are several shoes out there that allow your body the support that it needs! I wonder why the whole of America is in love with flip flops or ballet shoes? Is it laziness?!?
OH NOOOOOOOOO !! Not those disgusting ballet shoes again!!
They recently did a thing on cnn on how BAD these jerky shoes are for your feet. Dangerous with little to no support – they are garbage.
PLUS THEY LOOK SO STUPID ON EVERYBODY UNLESS YOU ARE ON THE CENTER STAGE AT LINCOLN CENTER AND IN A TUTU!!
Ladies loose the silly little junky shoes!
hey my comment did not show up Ill wait a while then do it over I guess
We love ballet flats but better to find a pair with out straps to flatter the leg. If you need straps for support a cute gladiator sandal will provide added support and look much more updated than this
ill fitted pair.
I feel like I found gold with Orthoheel shoes. Check them out on Zappos.com. I have a very high arch, and they are the ONLY brand that I’ve found that works for me. Their sandals are nice, and not too clunky looking. I think they’ll improve as the brand expands. They’ve only been around for a few years.
I have had multipule foot surgeries and I wear Crocs most of the time, the dufferent styles they have are great and they don’t bother my feet while I walk the dogs, check them out
Oh my gosh. Over fifty feet can be a real problem. All of a sudden hammer toes, bunions, fallen arches, etc… All those “fashionable” shoes that squeezed your toes unnaturally? Get ready for trouble. I agree that Orthaheel (recommended by Dr. Weil) are great – at least they have some arch support — but I so wish they would make them more fashionable. The sandals are ok — but how about some more professional styles? I like NAOT — pricey but worth it (catch them on sale). Flats ARE nice — but they often don’t give any arch support so spell trouble. The reason why you need a “strap” on a flat is to keep them on your feet….but I agree the “maryjane” look reminds me of adolescence so I am not a total fan. I have practical shoes (for travel, walking, etc.) but also a few not more stylish. The squished toes and heels beyond 1″ are history for me. I have a pair of MBTs for walking — they really do help your posture and my feet.
Barb, your shoes are cute. If you need more support, just insert some gel orthotics or gel arch supports. Your shoes are much more flattering for summer than those clunky platform sandals that have been in style WAY too long.
Christina I agree – I need cushioning and support in a shoe if I need to walk anywhere farther than from the car parking lot to a restaurant:)
That’s my thing too, Barb, but I find these Skechers very easy to walk in. Here’s a bit more of the description: This women’s casual shoe features a leather and breathable mesh upper with satin fabric stripe overlays; the instep straps have a hook-and-loop side closure. The fabric lining, cushioned insole and a shock-absorbing midsole enhance your comfort, while the rubber outsole of the Skechers Bikers-Proposal sneaker provides traction and flexibility.
The best thing to do is try on a pair!
these shoes look insane . They also destroy your feet you must have some sort of support .
Leave the ballet slippers for the ballet dancers and you go out an get a sensable pair of walking shoes you wont be sorry .
I always see big fat women in these little flat goofy shoes and they look like … well they look totally out of proportion . A little heel a inch or so is nec to have a healthy walk with healthy feet
I agree leave the ballet slippers to the ballet dancers.
