I have always been so self confident and self assured. But, after the age of 50 I began questioning myself. Each negative experience I had, I personalized it, beat myself up. I don’t understand why this is happening. Does anyone else out there experience this to? Is it menopausal or just mind games we play with ourselves?
What do you do to make changes you feel need to be made? They say if we want to find love, we need to love ourselves first.
I think I have been a bit depressed, and am trying to get myself out of the funk, medication free.
Your words of wisdom welcome…

Hi birdlover,
Sorry to hear about your downer mood. I have been through a clinical depression in the past, so I will share with you what I learned from that exprerience in hopes that some of it may be helpful to you. First of all, get yourself medically checked out…..the works. Many medical conditions can affect mood. Obviously menopause is one, but there’s also anemia and thyroid problems just to name a couple. (I’m not a medical professional, nor do I pretend to have expetensive medical knowledge, just my personal experience). Look into seeing a counselor. Someone that can help you take an objective look at your life situation. The 50′s are a complicated time in a woman’s life: empty nest, aging parents, looming retirement, menopause, well, you get the idea. Also, I would recemmend reading uplifting literature such as The Four Agreements, Sex and the Seasoned Woman, or something in a field you enjoy.
Being on VN is a good thing. The women here are very supportive. And you will find that many are going through the same experience.
As to the medications, like I said, I am not a medical professional. In my own personal experience, I wish I had waited before I took medications, but then again, that’s hindsight. Not only was I in a major life stressor at the time, but I have a genetic predisposition to depression, so, I don’t know. If you do decide to consider medications, I would recommend that you go to a psychiatrist and not a general practitioner. Psychiatrists are the experts in these types of medications. In fact, if you have a medical school nearby, that would be the best. Schools are into the latest treatments and innovations and have the latest research.
Good luck to you. Keep me posted!
