Of course it’s great to be in love and open a card inscribed in your beloved’s handwriting. But now that the lovers and husbands have vanished from my life, the valentines that remain and that I still treasure are from the others whom I cherish. Long ago, my beloved Dad, who was not usually demonstrative, gave me a silver heart on valentine’s day that I treasure more than any other necklace. My son Ben has given me so many beautiful valentine cards and poems. One year, when I was feeling a bit blue, he gave me a talking heart that said “I love you.” The flowers my mother sent me the year after she became a widow and we were both feeling my father’s loss. This valentine’s day I am looking forward to making a heart shaped cake and valentines with the little girls next door, and watching my son perform in concert at a local club.

My favorite memory of Valentine’s Day is when someone gave candy and roses and said would you be mine! That is so meaningful to me. It is so thoughtful for one to send a note with their heart comments written and then to give it to you in letter form.

I want to create a memory this year but not sure what to do.  Valentine’s Day provides a great opportunity to show love to family and friends!
