I found a great book, The Bounce Back Book, by Karen Salmansohn. In it she explains in a very simple, easy-to-digest way, how to let go and move on, and why it’s important to do so. She has a website, notsalmon.com – please check it out. I have really enjoyed this book and can think of many who could benefit from it. After all, we’ve all had a setback from which to recover, haven’t we? This book even helps you move one from something that happened long ago (and she has many others, just as fun and helpful).

In it she talks about 8 Ways to Free Yourself from Resentment, Anger and Bitterness:

1. Say a Prayer – we are all good, loving souls, who occasionally get lost. Pray for this person to find their way back to a happier place.

2. Focus on Gratitude – your happiness will be *forever* on a chaotic roller coaster ride if you allow your self image to be at the mercy of unpredictable events and unreliable people. Joy is an INSIDE job.

3. Look for the Lesson – Many Buddhists consider huge difficulty to be a sign you’re an old soul. The bigger your misfortunes, the closer you are to enlightenment. What are *you* being tested for right now?

4. Maintain Perspective – This tough time is simply a *part* of your life, not your whole life. It’s just a slice. The best is yet to come.

5. Learn the Lesson – Develop a student, not victim, mentality. Disentangle yourself from emotionally harmful situations and be sure to consciously *avoid* similar situations in the future.

6. Let Go of Resentment – “Resentment is the poison you swallow hoping the other person will die” – Carrie Fisher. Resentment not only hurts yourself – it also gives the other person control of your emotions.

7. Stay Centered – When you respond to hate with hate, anger with anger, bitterness with bitterness, you ironically become part of the problem. Choose to resist becoming like them and put in the effort to remain loving, soulful and happy.

8. Get Revenge Positively – The best revenge really is - living a happy, successful life!

So yes… in order to live your life in it’s most healthy, fulfilled way, the way it was intended… you really do need to forgive, in your own way and in your own time.
