I would be lost without my dogs. As a trainer, I have selected 8 dogs to build my teaching pack. They are my joys! Each has such a wonderfully unique personality and my relationship with each is precious and irreplaceable. I share this with my clients: Dogs come to us in 2 basic groups. Those that nurture the person we are and those who teach us valuable lessons that make us better people (ie: patience, determination, tranquility, courage and leadership skills to name a few).

I believe that dogs (and other critters who we companion) create a pathway to our primal selves. They can show us how to reach that inner self that is often obscured by the hectic/chaotic lives we live. If you're experiencing a negative in your life, trust a dog to pull it to the surface, reach inside to soothe it or sit with you till it passes. Go hug your doggies, people!

The last three dogs have been Shitzus. We have one that is getting older and she has pain in her hips. But we got a Shitzu puppy about a year ago, and she has given new life to our older one. We full time in our fifthwheel trailer and they are great travelers. You know what they say about Shitzu's they are like potato chips you can't have just one!

My heart goes out to you! I will pray that your pooch is found and soon! After coming home one evening from work and finding both of my dogs (who have since passed away - one after 15 years with me and one after only seven) in the front yard, I put a humongous chain and padlock on my gate so that the meter readers have to jump the fence to read my meter. They are FAMOUS for letting dogs out! When your little guy comes home...lock the gates!! :)

He was taken right out of our yard. I went to the side gate and it had been opened. Buster (my puppy) couldn't have pushed it open himself. I got home around 1 p.m. The pool maintenance was there at 10 a.m. and he said he was there then. The coyotes don't roam around during the day. He's probably in a nice home, but I want him back. Thanks for the hug!!

Oh dynamomma, my heart is breaking over your little dog. Was he taken from your yard? I'm so sorry that you're suffering (how do you cope?), and I'm praying that you are reunited soon.

Hugging you ((((dynamomma))))

As a general rule I've never had the time to devote to a dog like I think one should. So we haven't had many dogs. Since I retired, I gave in. We had an adorable black and white, male Shit zu. Last year after a very bad accident and subsequent surgery that had me layed up for months, that little guy was such a companion. He'd come bounding into my room and just sit there until I spoke to him and then he'd bounce up on my lap. He never left my side and was right there for me to talk to. I loved that little guy. In October of last year, someone stole him. We spent hours looking, putting up poster, going to animal shelters, etc. I'm sure I'll see him again because he had a microchip and as soon as someone takes him to the vet he'll be found. I miss him so much. I haven't had the heart to get another dog and start over. I love that little dog, but I don't like training.

I can sympathize with you. Everytime I introduce a new pet to the household, it takes at least a year for all of us to adjust. But I just can't resist adding one from time-to-time. The dog I have now is way too big for me--he's 55 lbs. I just wanted a small to medium-sized dog. But Andy won my heart over the first time we met. I was out walking my older dog (who has since passed away). Down the street, I could see a stray dog, something I usually try to avoid. As we approached him, he just sat down and waited, rather than rushing up and causing a disturbance. So, I petted him and he followed us home. But all was not easy that first year. Andy had a hard time coming to terms with a leash. If he saw a child or another dog, he would leap high in the air and tug and pull. I finally trained him using treats, which he responded well to. Now, he's my best bud, except for the other day when I literally had to pry a stray kitten out of his mouth. That was traumatic, to say the least. Unfortunately, I cannot afford to take him traveling. We go out most days to walk and he loves riding in the car. In the winter, I take him with me to run my errands. I know he doesn't understand why he can't go with me in the summer. Too bad they don't speak English, isn't it.

Anyway, enjoyed reading about your experiences with your dog.
