I am sorry it took so long to reply. If it is not too difficult, I would like some more information about that community. I am afraid Mom finds something wrong with everywhere that I suggest.

Hi Suni! I'm so gald to hear back from you and to learn more about you. I have just returned to the U.K after 10 days away with my husband, split between Houston and Tampico. He had to stay behind as the 2nd ship was delayed due to bad weather. I am only here long enough to unpack my warm weather clothes and repack some for the cooler Canadian weather. It is snowing tonight south of London where we live and so I hope I won't have a problem getting back to Heathrow to fly to Victoria B.C. on Tuesday. I will travel up island to our home in Parksville on Wednesday with my parents after a visit with our youngest daughter in Victoria. She will complete her nursing degree programme at U Vic. in April.

It is such a small world........ my husband went to the marine traing schoolin North Van and his eldest sister lives there. I have a neice who lives in London, Ontario with her husband and son and another baby due in August. She is a music teacher there. The young woman I mentioned before, the daughter of the friend I lost to cancer lives in maple ridge and i plan to spend a week or so with her and our 'grandaughter' while I am in B.C. And you know we are practically neighbours as our permanent home is in Parksville and our children were born in Comox! I have never in my 26 years on the west coast, been to Texada but would love to check it out some time. If you would like to venture into 'civilization' I would welcome you to come to visit on the 'big island'. I will be home until February 17th when I will fly to Southern Ontario to visit with family and friends in my hometown area for a few weeks before returning back to my husband in the U.K. There are some wonderful easy hikes in our neck of the woods if you think you'd like to meet. My email address is dariamcleod@shaw.ca if you would care to correspond privately and maybe make a plan for my time in B.C. I'm not sure when I will go to Maple ridge but expect it won't be too long after I get there;.......maybe the next week. Perhaps you'd like to tag along and visit your son? So many possibilities.... I hope you and your family have had a good start to the new year and that I will hear back from you soon. From one west coast island girl to another, Daria.

HI Daria

GREAT hearing from you! Right now my (2nd) husband and I live on a small island between Powell River and Vancouver Island. We can sort-of see the Comox Air Force Base on a really sunny day. Unfortunately not too many of those lately! But I am thankful we haven't had any snow yet. My husband runs a gas compressor station, compressing gas from the Mainland to the Sunshine Coast, to here then over to Vancouver Island.

We live here for 6-months of the year, on-site, in a new mobile home the company installed for us. We are one of only 5 people who inhabit this end of the island. I think in total there are possibly 1,000 - 1,200 people who live on this island full time. We have contracted for him to work here until the end of April, then we pack up and drive to Ontario. We have friends in Cambridge Ontario and I know where Pt. Colbourne is.

My eldest daughter worked at Harrods when she traveled for four years after graduating from college. She saw many famous people while working there, including Princess Di once and Rod Stewart. I think she only worked for Harrods for 4 or 6 months, enough time to make enough money so she and the friends she made while she lived in the UK could travel again. She also worked for a short stint at a Canadian bar in the UK, The Maple Leaf Pub. She returned, worked, got married and now lives in North Vancouver with her husband and son. My youngest daughter, who lives in London, ON flew in with her husband and 3 kids to spend Christmas with them. I drove over and spent a week with them. It was hectic, loud and noisy and I loved it! The grandchildren range in age from 8 years old to18-months - 3 girls and 3 boys. My son and his wife and 2 children live about 45-minutes outside of Vancouver, in Maple Ridge.

I would love to retire in BC, on Vancouver Island. My hubby wants to relocate to southern Ontario (where we bought a small retirement home 10 years ago) and live there for the summer, then be snow birds and live in Arizona for the winter months. Ontario (for us) is more affordable but I love BC and Vancouver Island for all the reasons you mentioned above.

There was (is?) talk about installing a LNG tank / plant here on Texada. You should see how upset the residents here are about the possibility.

My ex-husband worked for Shell in Sarnia, ON. for a few years. They were a good company to work for.

The traveling to Texas, writing an article about the adventure and the delivery of LNG sounds exciting. I find I don't have much to do while living here. My job (in Vancouver) was downsized (about 5 years ago). I am 62 and basically unemployable (there are NO jobs here) so I take Eldercollege courses, have joined the hiking club and a knitting group (relearned how to knit) and try and keep busy and occupied. When we finally retire I want to live in a community where there is an active community centre, Eldercollege classes and activities to participate in. Life here is beautiful but too slow for me. However starting all over again in our 50's this job has aided us financially.

I will look forward to hearing from you again any time you get the time and/or opportunity to type. Wishing you the best in the New Year, health and happiness.

Which island and doing what kind of work Suni? My husband is a global mariner who was a commercial fisher for nine years prior in the 90's and we wondered about the nature of your husband's island employment. Six on, six off or some other configuration? You have sparked our curiosity especially since we live on Vancouver Island. And yest it is a very small world indeed!

About the 2010 winter Olympics....... I see both sides of it as I believe there are many more pressing needs, however I think mankind needs to practice at sport and it was away of learning for all my brothers and me while growing up. Ithink children need inspiration in this direction especially with all the sedentary, electronic games kids play insessantly these days. Also our late son Ian was a tri-athlete so I have a fondness for that event and other challenging sports, both winter and summer. Still i think the amout of money spent on the games is outrageous and could be put into sports programmes for youth throughout the country instead of for the elite or as you have said into health care and social assistance for poor and hungry B.C. families. And I agree, it is sad that most of us can not afford to attend the games but I think viewing select events on TV gets you closer to the action without the cost....... It will always be a great controversy that will continue as long as the games themselves. So good to have a thoughtful exchange on important current events! Thanks Suni!.

Hi Suni, Sorry this took so long but our youngest daughter arrived in England from Vancouver island for an extended Christmas visit earlier this month and we have been very busy having a wonderful time together! Our eldest daughter also worked briefly at Harrod's but got another job more suitable soon after. how coincidental! And you are from the western end of the same road I was born on in Southern Ontario. Hyway 3 runs from Windsor to Fort Erie passing right through my home town of Port Colborne, calling itself Main St. Small world isn't it? I moved to Vancouver island in 1986 when I was 26 and my parents and one of my 4 brothers have followed. The rest are still in Southern Ontario; Welland, Guelph and Kitchener. I go back to visit every year spending time with family and friends, but we will always maintain our Vancouver Island home no matter where else in thge world my husband's work takes us. It is, in our humble opinion the very best place on earth to live, having travelled the globe, all things considered. Great climate, fresh air and water, beauty and wilderness abounding, reasonable health care, low crime, all ammenities and cultural desires available........need I say more? Our little piece of paradise! My husband got his degree in marine sciences at BCIT and is a Captain with Shell Oil UK, currently working out of thier London UK head office as a Superintendant of Ship's Operations. He oversees a brand new fleet of Natural Gas Tankers being built in Qatar and transporting liquified natural gas (LNG) around the globe. We are preparing for a trip to Houston, Texas where he will command the Shell ship Umm Slal into a Louisiana terminal to deliver the largest cargo in North American history! I will be shooting photos from shore of the ship's passage and together we will write an article for marine publications. I coudln't be more excited as I have not been allowed to work while in the UK and have needed more purpose and occupation since coming here. In the New Year I will head back to Canada for visits in B.C and Ontario. Where Vancouverare you? It's so big....... I will be spending considerable time with a young vibrant woman (daughter of a friend I lost to cancer in 2001) and her baby, who we consider our grandchild. Maybe we could meet for coffee? Tell me more about yourself and where you live if you are willing to share. It's always interesting to hear about other vibrant Canadian women and make new aquaintances!

Where Vancouverare you? It’s so big……. I will be spending considerable time with a young vibrant woman (daughter of a friend I lost to cancer in 2001) and her baby, who we consider our grandchild. Maybe we could meet for coffee? Tell me more about yourself and where you live if you are willing to share. It’s always interesting to hear about other vibrant Canadian women and make new aquaintances!

My son's In-Laws live in a very nice retirement community south-east of Calgary. I spent Thanksgiving with them in Oct. It's not gated but it's new. They are in their 80's. Would you like me to find out more about it?

Hi Carol - I am Suni - brand new to this site. My husband works 6-months of the year on a small island between Vancouver Is. and the Mainland. The other 6 months of the year we live in a "retirement" home, in Grand Bend, Ontario, on the shores of Lake Huron. I used to live in Sarnia before I moved out here. Where in Ontario does your sister live? Like the old saying goes, "it's a small world."

Hi - I am Suni, originally from Windsor, ON. Moved to Vancouver BC in 1995 - LOVE it here! I have never been to London, UK. My oldest daughter traveled to the UK following her graduation and worked for Harrods. I'd love to see Harods!

I totally agree that there is much more going on in the world than Tiger and his affairs and the insanity of Sarah Palin.

Olympics: This is just my opinion. BC doesn't seem to have enough money to keep open wings of hospitals, emergency rooms are crowded and the waiting time to see a doctor is abominal; kids in poorer neighbourhoods have their food program cut, there are not enough forestry people to proctect the environment from poachers, the hiking trail system here has gone to ruin, etc. But the government found billions of dollars to spend on the Olympics - the prices of the tickets are so expensive most of us cannot afford to attend, and this is only for a two week period. Personally I think it is insane.
