I am having a real issue with my boyfriend’s indoor dog. The dog has the run of the house, and the dog hair drives me crazy – it is everywhere. I have let my feelings known, but apparently the dog will have to stay. My boyfriend had no alternative ideas to “ease” the issue. How do I handle this?

If he had the dog before you, probably they are a package deal….make friends with the doggy and take it upon yourself to brush/groom the fur….regular brushing should take care of the furry stuff…..that and sticky rollers….guys probably don’t vacuum as much as women would (based on experience with my two adult sons)…so you might as well make friends with the vacuum cleaner as well…hair is part of the deal with having pets…..of course there are breeds that don’t shed much…I certainly would not say its the dog or me, unless you are willing to follow through with breaking up, since he might choose the dog.
Thanks Sunblossom. The dog, a Lab, actually belongs to his son. My bf took him when the son went to college. I have made some progress and made the bedroom “off limits”. The dog lays on the couch, hangs around when we cook and eat. Bf does put the dog in basement at night… Apparently “when” his son gets to a point that he can keep the dog, he will get him back….. if that ever happens!
I love the dogs and puppies and would never want harm to come to them or for them to be in homes where they aren’t loved and taken care of. However, for the first time in almost 40 years, I no longer have to put up with dogs. The last child, with her dog, has finally left the nest. I’ve had the backyard re-landscaped, my carpets shampooed, furniture cleaned, pressure washed the concrete, doors and areas where the dog liked to lay. The dog has been gone for about a month now and I’m not kidding, everyday I look out my bedroom window to a lawn that doesn’t have poop or patches of grass dead because of dog pee. I enjoy the garden and flowers where there’s no chewed up plants, or trees, or holes and just lots of color from the flowers. I look at the sliding glass door and the area around it and love how clean it looks and doesn’t smell like a dog. Everytime I gave in for one of the kids to have a dog, we established the rules of care, feeding and training. The kids knew there was a level of responsibility they had to take to keep me from becoming a tyrant. It never worked as well as I’d hoped. But it was tolerable. So after I accepted the fact that the dog was here to stay, and it was kind of cute and smart, the messes were a lot easier to manage. The dogs had to be bathed regularly and groomed every few weeks to keep the dog hair and smell down. The were responsible for vacuuming. Most the time that worked. I put up this cute little fence to keep them behind when they needed coralling. So after we established their rules, the only time I would step in and help them was when their busy schedules interfered with being a good dog owner. You’re not going to believe this . . . but I have actually entertained the idea of getting a little lap dog for company and to love. Go figure!!!!??!??
I used to have 4 dogs, I now have none, just a very old, blind cat…once she goes to kitty heaven I am determined, as much as I miss the company of a dog, to never have a pet again…..I go to the pound or the puppy store and hold them when I need a “fix”….or go visit my daughter’s doggies….they are always thrilled to see me…
PS..one of my daughter’s dogs is a pug..all black and what a personality.
oh oh, dogs, you will get an earfull. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, my dogs. At this stage of my life i rather have the dogs. Sorry, that is just how i feel. I have a cleaning lady and tile floors. We have a screened-in patio with a doggy door. My dogs are inside specially in this heat. One sleeps under my bed, her decision trust me i tried for her to be in the family room where she has 2 beds. So i bought her a flatter bed for under the bed. The other one sleeps on the couch, but i bought a huge sofa cover and it works fine. But i LOVE dogs. I will never, ever date a person that does not because i know it can be a problem. I will not live in a place that will not allow at least one small dog. I do not buy dogs, the ones i have had been rescued from people that had them but did not love them. The only good thing about my partner is that he loves and cares for our dogs better than i. They will miss him dearly when he finally leaves. They adore him. I guess i will let him have visitation rights
Having said all this, is it your house or his? Are u living together or you just come to the house a lot? Because another solution is to be at your house more w/your honey and let Fido be in his house. Most men are not good about cleaning a house or should i say as often as it should be. When one has animals that has to be every couple of days and the floor has to be vacuumed daily. We finally bought one of those sweepers that are announced on TV. My husband says it is the best gadget i have bought thus far. Walmart finally brought those in and it is in their “As seen on TV” shelves. It cost $39.99 plus tax. I take my dogs to the groomer and have them shaved. I do it for both reasons, less hair everywhere and because we live in Florida and this heat is murder. A dog can be a lot of fun. Give the pooch a chance.
Lab fur can be a bit of a challenge. It is harder to pick up with the vacume. Our Quinn is a golden retreiver/lb mix & I have a Bissel Home Health (I think that’s what it’s called) vacume for pet hair & man, that sucker must be good cuz I’m always emptying the cannister out!
Maybe your bf will invest in a good strong vacume that’s the only sure fire solution I can think of. Sounds like he’s compromised so far. If he really loves this dog, I’d advise you don’t push it too far.
you can buy a vacuum, but someone has to run it daily.
Thanks to everyone for their advice. Thanks to this site for letting us get in touch with others to share our concerns… I have thought about this issue for days and I could make myself sick if I continued, so my decision is to choose my BF over my feelings. He is the best thing to happen to me and I have no intention of letting something like this get between us. He has had the dog since his divorce (2004) and it has been a source of companionship. I totally understand how much he cares for the dog….. so I will have to seek alternatives to dealing with my issue. I will continue to put a sheet over the couch – so as not to sit in dog hair – and continue to stress the importance of me having ONE room that is off limits to the dog…
After my divorce (2006) I moved out of state – to get away from my ex. My BF still lives in that area. He got in touch with me through Classmates early last year. We had gone to school together most of our lives. That is how we started this relationship. I have family near the town he lives in, so I do go up – only about two or three times a month. He rarley comes to visit me – has to get a dog sitter….
I believe God put us together. We are so compatable in what we like to do, our dreams for the future, and the fact that we are “in love” with each other. I want this man in my life. God said our life would not be without problems – but if we endure, the end would be worth it. My BF is worth it!
Blessings to you all.
Move out! That dog is your man’s best friend!
I do not live with my BF. As I said above, I only get to visit occassionally. Don’t get me wrong, I love animals. Had a horse and coon hounds during my first marriage. My ex husband even bought me a chichuahua for my birthday one year – against my wishes. I was the one that had to care for the animal and clean up after him. There is nothing more tacky to me than having dog hair all over my clothes! I will continue to see my BF. He understands how I feel and does try to clean the house before I visit, and he is agreeable on my need for a “dog free room”. I am trying to cope with the situation as best I can. I do not nag….. I tolerate. That’s just me and everyone is different.
