Michelle Obama's Narciso Rodriguez Dress Misses the Mark
posted 11/07/2008, 04:13PM new!
As an image consultant, I’ve been following First Ladies for many years. Most of them are “adopted” by designers who educate them and dress them in the worldly and sophisticated manner deserving of the wife of the President of the United States. Very few First Ladies came into the role with the look they left with, and Michelle Obama will probably be no exception.

Even Jackie Kennedy, known for her style, was taken under the wing of Oleg Cassini and groomed and shaped to become the fashion icon she was known to be. She dressed in something close to a preppy style before becoming First Lady. It is likely that Michelle will choose designers she likes, but I expect her style will evolve.

I loved her purple dress —- it’s a great color for her; and Maria Pinto is a rising star. The Victory Speech dress by Narciso Rodriguez missed the beat, and I wonder if someone is already advising Michelle about her attire. The “line” of this dress was all wrong. It makes her hips look much wider than they are, and it makes her tummy look like it protrudes. Michelle has the most common figure flaw for women: wider at the “middle“—in other words, at the hips, waist and tummy. I expect she liked the design, thinking the black line at the waist would make her waist look smaller. It did, but at the same time, the red pattern was almost round; and round lines suggest roundness or fullness.

For her figure type, this would be a No No. The colors were great, and I wish she had worn an all-red dress. She would look divine! Especially if she added red lipstick. It would make her face pop and her eyes sparkle!

(You can see Michelle's dress & the runway version here: http://blog.sandydumont.com)

I’d also like to add (as a corporate image consultant) that in order to look more worldly and elegant, Michelle should consider suits in jewel tones. She would look especially good in fuchsia, magenta, cherry red and more of those wonderful violet colors she has already worn. She should avoid orange and lime green, as they are food colors and not as classy as jewel tones.

Great advice. I heard one savvy woman (actually it was Myrna Blyth, one of the founders of "More") describe Michelle's victory dress as a "lava lamp."

I was embarrassed that I noticed how terrible the dress looked and wondered what she was thinking. I pride myself on accepting the person not their outer-wrappings. I read what the Hollywood reviewers were saying by going on line and I was pleasantly surprised how kind people were and how accepting of the fact that people make mistakes sometimes about what they wear and such is life. What a fantastic person in the White House she is going to be. She is the black amazon that the White has needed for long long time. Plus, she is a brilliant woman I am told. So I think we will be hearing from her in ways that might surprise us--I so look forward to it!

HI Carol and Lauree, We are all in agreement. Michelle made an unfortunate choice this time. I'm sure she will evolve and become a real style leader in the very near future. She's refreshing to see most of the time! Sandy

Actually, I loved her dress because it did not look like anything I'd seen anywhere else. But I spend a lot of my professional time in jeans...so y'll need to consider the source!

Sandy gimme a break. Its clear Michelle has a personal style and has not given in to the stylist gods. I think its fabulous that she wears what she likes, when she likes. Her intellect and communication skills are so remarkable, she can afford to get a little daring with her clothing choices. What a relief after years of starchy suits and conservative safe looks coming out of Washington ! And she has a super womanly body so lets please not  creat issues that are not there.

Generally, I am in favor of Mrs. Obama's style.  However, I agree with Sandy on the red and black victory speech dress.  It simply was not well suited for the first lady.  Now before anyone goes off, I concede to the fact that Michelle has great taste on a budget and is very well outfitted for the most part.  But ladies, all of us makes a goof now and again and Mrs. Obama is no exception.  Another past faux pas is Michelle's inclination to wear far to many gaudy beads and bows around the necklines of some of her ensembles.

The first lady, is fit, healthy, and bright, a real assest to the president.  She is a dedicated mother, trend setter, and role model.  In the end, a misplaced garment is not likely to difine this first lady in the annals of history.  She is a well dressed, educated woman with a bend toward practicality and glamour.  What more could we ask for in the year 2009?  She will most certainly find her way...carefully.
