Sarah Palin's big shopping adventure
posted 10/24/2008, 06:18PM new!
Yesterday on my radio show the main topic of conversation was...what else? The $150,000 spent by the Republican National Committee to give Sarah Palin a makeover. Her makeover included a $50,000 shopping spree at Saks Fifth Avenue and a $75,000 baby boomer diva trip to Neiman Marcus. According to reports, she also bought her children and husband lavish outfits as well. She continues to receive an $18,000 clothing allowance per week until the campaign is over. After that, her hand-me-downs will be donated to charity.

Callers were outraged over this action by the RNC. They couldn’t understand how Sarah could portray herself as a Hockey Mom. Don’t they all shop at Wal-Mart and Target? How dare the Republican Party say they are about helping the middle-class and trying to fix the economy when they frivolously throw away that kind of money!

Personally, I don’t see what the fuss is all about. As I told them, if they didn’t make a contribution to the Republican campaign then they should have no beef. Let the Republicans spend their money any way they choose. Needless to say, I wasn’t very popular yesterday!

But there's an even bigger question here. How much are we willing to spend and how far are we willing to go to fit a certain "image?" Society tells us the more youthful and vibrant we look, the more we will be considered beautiful and accepted. Some of us end up investing thousands of dollars on cosmetic surgery for that beauty guarantee. But just like everything else, beauty will fade over time.

Good points. This is not a huge deal. I'm not sure why it's even something the news is talking about... First of all, it is the party's money and anyone who donates funds to a party ought to know that the money's used for many purposes in campaigning, which would of course include things like this. Secondly, Ms. Palin herself is a self-proclaimed Tarket and K-Mart/Walmart shopper, so it's fair to say that she wouldn't have a wardrobe fitting to campaign for such a high level office. If it were a Democratic candidate on a shopping spree, something tells me that this would have gone virtually unnoticed. Just my $.02

Beauty starts on the inside, and radiates to the outside. Make-up and expensive clothing enhance one's natural beauty. There's no doubt that nice fabrics hide lots of flaws. There is a certain respect that a woman receives, when she is well-dressed. It says that she cares enough to take care of herself, and put her best foot forward. Do nice clothes always carry a hefty price tag? NO! I have found designer fabrics, and name brand clothing at stores like TJ Maxx, and Marshalls. It doesn't have to come from Rodeo Dr., or Neiman Marcus to be classy and look good. If I could afford nicer clothing, I would buy it, but only to a limit. When there are so many people homeless, and little children without shoes, I couldn't make myself be extravagant all the time.

"If it were a Democratic candidate on a shopping spree, something tells me that this would have gone virtually unnoticed. Just my $.02 " I remember when Jackie Kennedy's clothing budget was an issue, and it wasn't $150K! I think the reason Sarah Palin's wardrobe became an issue was because she has positioned herself as the walmart-shopping hockey mom, and that is totally at odds with spending 150K. You Betcha!

Everyone is talking about Sarah Palin’s expenditure of $150,000 for clothes for the campaign trail. In defense of her personal shoppers, it is difficult to assemble a wardrobe in a short period of time without making compromises in style, color or price. When I shop for a client, I take all these into consideration and may come up with only three or four items in a single shopping stint. Buying an expensive designer jacket or suit doesn’t guarantee that you will make the impact that you should if the style and color is not right. Impact is everything. When it comes to image, the devil is in the details, but the sum total is greater than all its parts. And that sum total is the impact you make. Or don’t make. View a slideshow of Sarah Palin's new clothes here (courtesy of The Wall Street Journal): http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122469070735558681.html?mod In my opinion, very few of the items Sarah Palin wore made the kind of impact she should have made. The grey Valentino jacket, for example, is too washed out and makes her look less dynamic and powerful (insert photo). None of the clothes were accessorized well. In addition, Palin needed a bolder lipstick. Look at the scoop-neck black suit for example, and you’ll see that is looks very austere without lipstick and accessories. Lastly, the green jacket is “sweet” but it makes very little impact in terms of presence. All in all, Palin paid too much for what she got, and the blame must go to her personal shoppers and image consultants.

afcpam, I totally agree with you--real beauty starts from within. If your outfit dictates who you are as a person, I believe you are one with very little substance. Beverly

It's obvious that Cindy McCain told her where to shop and for the very wealthy, that's not much money. But in a time when the economy is front and center, it does not bode well. Obama needs to re-sole his shoes (again) and she's wearing couture. Not a smart move.

Great topic..and frankly I am not overly excited about either candidate...But..about the money...why is this such a big deal? Looking for ways to bash Sara.
Frankly, I just want to know which consignment shop or Goodwill she's turning that red leather jacket into...
